Hey guys i bought this boat last year and never got it in the water, it turns out that I have a hole in a piston on the 1977 johnson 140. My two concerns are how much will a rebuild run me and will the rebuild last more than a couple of years? i had a mechanic tell me that these old johnson don't stand up too well after a rebuild. While searching the web a little I came acrosss outboardrebuild.com that gives a 6 year warrant but I am sure that I would pay well for that warrant. Thanks in advance.

140 good to rebuild?

I'm not sure what he meant by " They don't stand up after a rebuild". Why shouldn't they if it was done by a reputable tech who knew his or her stuff.
That powerhead was the basis for OMC's motor line-up 85-140 hp for over 20 plus years. It's a tried and true design so if you think you want to fix it go ahead. My suggestion however would try and first see to if you can find a good used short block ( or long block) for it and drop it on. They're all over if you start looking. Ebay, Scream and Fly, and even Craigslist. Just don't spend too much as there are plenty of good used complete engines too of that vintage or newer. Cheap!

BE SURE THE MECHANIC THAT TOLD U THAT DONT WORK ON IT,I HAVE A 1980 JOHNSON PREDICTOR WITH A 1980 115V4,I JUST HAD THE POWER HEAD BUILT OVER THE WINTER DUE TO A RING COMING APART WIPING OUT THE PISTON AND THE WALL,STILL RAN 48/50 BEFORE REBUILD,THOSE MOTORS ARE VERY STRONG,THIS MOTOR HAS ONLY BEEN INTO ONCE BEFORE,TRUST ME I RUN THE HELL OUT OF IT EVERY WEEKEND AT LAKE ERIE,IS WHAT A HAD DONE TO MY 115 IS,BORED .40 OVER,WIESCO PISTONS,REEDS,JETTING,TOTAL REBUILD COST ME $1700.00,BY A PROSHOP IN AKRON,OHIO.WILL NEED TO PUT 10 HRS BREAK IN TIME ON IT THIS SEASON BEFORE RUNNING IT IN THE UPPER 5000 RPM RANGE,BUT THE SHOP THAT BUILT IT STATES IT SHOULD NOW HAVE CLOSE TO 135 PONYS,IM HOPING FOR UPPER 50"S MAYBE EVEN THE 60 MARK,DONT WORRY ABIT ABOUT THAT MOTOR IT WILL PROVE ITSELF,KEEP CARBS CLEAN,RUN GOOD GAS AND OIL LET THE MOTOR DO THE REST,GOOD LUCK,CHECK YA LATER

the old V-4's are easy to rebuild but any motor that has burnt a hole in the piston has ran too lean and hot and may have other issues that are not apparent. I always seem to run into electrical problems with those motors, probably just becuase they are so old and electronics are much better now. They are not very fuel efficient IMO, they seem to waste a lot of gas and oil out the exhaust and they don't idle as smooth as a v-6 either. For what it costs to rebuild (labor + doing it right) you could most likely find a good running newer v6 which would be more fun any way because that old 140 is only pushing about 115 at the prop.

I HAVE A BUDDY HERE IN BUCYRUS THAT HAS A 200 EVINRUDE RUNS GREAT COMPRESSION IS FINE,HES GOING TO A 225 AND WANTS TO SELL HIS MOTOR IT WILL COME WITH THE SHIFTER HE WANTS $1600.00 FOR IT I DID SOME BOATING WITH HIM LAST YEAR IT RUNS REALLY STRONG IF U GO TO A BIGGER MOTOR AND THIS WILL HELP U LET ME KNOW,PRICE IS FIRM I THINK THATS A STEAL,I WAS GOING TO BUY IT FOR MY PREDICTOR,BUT HAVE DECIDED TO BUY A 270 CONVINCOR WITH A 496 AND LEAVE WELL ALONE ON THE PREDICTOR.LET ME KNOW IF U ARE INTERESTED IN THIS MOTOR THE LOWER UNIT HAD OVER $600.00 PUT INTO IT A YEAR OR 2 AGO.
