150 vs 235 evinrude for trimate 2

Brinks

New member
I am the proud new ow er of a 1979 trimate 2. Came with an evinrude 140 v4 (1989 supposedly) on it with one bad cylinder. So now I am in s eachof a decent used evinrude to swap out with it. (Yes cylinder is sired too far past honing and rebuilding for a reasonable amount). So I have sources a 1980 evinrude 235 v6 and an early eighties 150 v6. Marina tried to sell me a used 115hp and thinks I'm nutrients to want a 150 on such a small boat. The weight difference between the two motors is only 30 pounds which seems negligible for the extra power on tap! Transom solid, but it is a 35 year old boat. Looking for some Opinions. Ot trying to break any water speed records with a "ski" boat. But don't want to struggle to get skiers out of the water either. Thanks.

For a trimate I dont think I'd go much over 150 HP myself. The 235 rating on those early 80's crossflows was a "bit" on the optimistic side anyway.

Now i have read some of your posts and you are not one afraid to overpower!! So I'm curious as to why not overpower on the trimate? Hull design?

The hull design. Putting more power to the water isnt going to help you when 60 MPH is about as fast as you'd want to go with one anyway especially without a transom rebuild and solid mounts and hydraulic steering . Plus...theres a reason they call them two thirsty fives. I get 3-4 MPG out of my Enticer with a EFI 225 promax. Figure half that with a crossflow 235.

Thanks wired! That's the advice i was looking for. I think i just found a 140 v4 identical to what is on the back now. So i will probably go that route as it "should" be an easy plug and play swap and i can just put my old motor in the corner of the shop and possibly use it for parts if need be. (Vro's are pricey). Thanks for the input!
