1600 Miles+$600 in Gas = Merc 280

You probably won't need much more than what you have for props now if any at all. Remember that's a pretty heavy hull and if you plan on spinning 8000+ it's not gonna be a huge prop. I would expect you to run about the same as a 250 3.0litre.

Yep, I have any at all, but they are all small shaft....not used to dealing with a large shaft. So in recap... I need something that will actually work with my newly acquired large shaft.

Boat weighs in @ 1,375lbs (I think that is dry)... I guess thats not that heavy if you compare it to the 18' pulsare that is 1,415lbs. I plan to keep the R's under 8000 anyway.

If I can run with a 3.0 250 like Hotbeeks @ 85mph gps, then I will be a happy man!

Thanks for the input.

Boston Predictor:

Why not try a speedzone. Just ask Boatman and Wildman, they both have tested many diffrent merc props and the speedzone was the best no question. Great holeshot too.

I must be honest, I am not to familiar with that prop, but I am open to anything...Can you get me a website or phone number?

Thanks!

I definitey think you'll be there. I just think you'll be there turning more rpms and a smaller prop.

Sounds good to me:bigthumb:

I spoke with some people and I am going to try a 25 pitch...

I got the pitch, now I just need to pick a prop.

I am probably gonna push the motor back another couple inches (we had decided on 10" for my 2.4).......maybe like 12 or 13 for the 2.5.

Keep the info coming boys.:popcorn::cheers

I'm at 13 1/2" with mine. Bluehealer is at around 18" on his. I'm not sure what the perfect setback dimension is ?

I do a lot of water sport activities too. I have two young boys(4&6) We do some fishing, tubing, skiing(me/wife). You'll like the hole shot of a four blade prop and you won't sacrifice much on the topend(1-2mph) With my trophy props I rarely even move my jackplate.(I leave it in the full up postion) If I ski or tube I'll drop about 1/4 on the gauge and trim in/under.

Hotbeek....

You are a plethora of information, I really appreciate it!

My only concern is that those 3.0's have so much more torque than my 2.5. Even Kip said that with a 3.0 300 my setback is almost unlimited, but with the 2.5 280 we really don't know. I have over setback for skiing before, and it sucks dragging a slalom skiier for 15' before the power band really kicks in.

That was with a totally different motor/boat, and it was setup wrong when I got it, so I am probably comparing apples to oranges.

I think I will stay similar to what you have for setback. If you can pull a skier with 13.5" setback w/ the hyd. slider all the way up, I should be able to at least do it with the slider down.

Thanks again:cheers

Hotdaddy, I did some math and depending on what gear ratio you have, you are going to be in the 20 to 22 inch range for a prop to run top end. For water sports, you may have to run smaller! 8500rpm's with the 1.75 gears comes out to 91.9mph before you subtract for slip with a 20" prop or 96.6 with a 21". Your set up will have an effect on final numbers, but I think that is going to be the range of pitch you need to be in.96.6-10%=86.9. Those same 2 props with the 1.87 gears are 86.1mph and and 90.4 before slip. boatman

Compared to what this motor was made for yes this is a heavy boat atleast when run as a single. My neighbor has a pulsare with a 225 Promax heads tightened just a bit with an SVS about 245-250hp and he runs low to mid 70's not sure what prop. His biggest problem is he can't swing props with any size to them. My buddy up the lake runs a 250 3.0 a blows by him. I hope this package worksout for you keep us posted.

i have two friends with pulsars. one has a 95 merc 2.5 225. he runs 75 all day long with a 25P.

the other started with a 3.0 250 merc and would run 77-78 with a 27P. he then sent his motor out to simon for a suposed 345 horse kit. he was running 86.7 with the same 27P tempest before he blew up his stock l/u.

both run 8" setback and jack it to the sky.

good luck:thumb:

Thanks boatman...Sounds like the high R's are where the speed is at. Oh, well...see how long she can hold together! LOL

I do have the 1.75 (sportmaster) gears.

If your math is right and I have a good setup, I can live with 86-87mph:banana:

Come spring, I am sure the experimentation will be never-ending!!!

I will be in touch.

Thanks for the info Nas...I mean illMATTIC! LOL

You guys are great man, I get so much input from this place it takes me hours to digest it all.

Thanks:cheers

My 1994 Pulsare with a bone stock Merc 225Xri, 7.5" setback, Trophy Plus 26 will run 73+ mph with a full tank, gear, and two adults. One of these days I'm going to take everything out of the boat including the play-pen pads and see what she'll do with on person/half tank of gas!! Bet I can break 75-76 mph!!

Hey JP,

Humor me cuz I am not real up on the XRI's. That is 2.5 L displacement....correct?

I love the colors on your boat by the way.

JP yours is running well but that's the joy of torque from a fishing style motor loaded unloaded almost the same speed without having to change everything. Oh yeah and how many pounds did you remove from your hull when you redid it?

Im eager to see how fast this thing is...When is the sea trial?
You should plan on attending the CT river run this October. There is usually a huge turnout..Lots of checks.. I will not miss it this year. Ide like to smoke.. I mean race you too.;):)

Trial run should be April.

I would like to attend the October CT river run......

I would also love to see Boston Predictor smoke..I mean race me. We just gotta be careful Cops are worse than they used to be, but whatever.
I was born and raised in New Britain and we hate to loose, so good luck.

Can't wait to meet some of you guys. Keep up the junk talk, I enjoy it.

Buy the way BP you should worry about the G-Men before you worry about racing the 280! (assuming you are a Pats fan!)
