1970 Checkmate MX-14

That will be a last priority. I've been looking at parts for these old engines and all the other necessary parts for the boat and it adds up quickly. I would eventually like to get to that point but for now I don't need anymore moving parts. I was looking at a midsection of a short shaft merc of this model year at this old marina. It was just the midsection with the transom mount with the power trim parts on it and it looked like I would have to swap quite a few parts.

Its not hard to Change at all . You take the 4 bolts out of the old rams . Pull the rams and put the power rams on the same way . Takes about 30 mins or so .

For your transom you can drill through the glass on the inside with a boring bit and see if the wood is wet . Chances are the transom is shot . I towed my Trimate II home from Cleveland Ohio and the motor didn't bounce or anything . Transom sounded rock solid too . Put the boat in the water ran it for about a half hour . Got it back on the trailer and noticed the motor had busted up the back of the boat pretty good .

I was also told that the reverse tilt lock had to be taken out. Also, do I need an alternator for power trim? I don't think I have any alternators on either engine.

Well I just went outside and pried off a weird looking piece of fiberglass that looked like cement that was on top of the transom. Looks like there's a good piece of wood that was put in the middle, and someone left the rest in. Sorry for the picture quality. I'll take better ones tomorrow.

You should have a stator under the flywheel . You don't have to take the reverse lock out either . I have mine still in the motor on my Vmate .

I know I have stators. However the wires coming down from them aren't in great shape. There are some cracks in the coating and the wire is green colored. Is it possible to just solder new wires on or do I need a whole new stator?

I would order a new stator . That's a easy fix too . I don't know what those numbers would be for. My numbers start with CHK than the last two numbers would be the year mine is 75

I was going to pull the carpet up and look. It seems pretty solid, but I thought the transom was solid too...
But the way I look at it it's never bad to have a brand new transom that you built yourself and know is strong and will handle a load. With the deck of, I'd like to replace the dashboard piece and put larger pieces of wood for the deck supports. I don't like how it bends a little when pressure is put on it.
I've been looking through the restorations and I really like how redstrat did his mx-16 transom.

I put Sea Cast in two of my Checkmates . I was going to go with wood until I read up on the sea cast . It does cost alittle more but in the long run worth it in my book . When I ever get my 14 Ft home Sea cast is going into it also . But either way you do it will be fine . You will have a very nice boat when your finished .....

I have some good news about the engines. I pulled the lower units and checked them out. The 1969 one (left) had little water pressure coming out and I believe it has to do with a stiff impeller, broken gasket, and loose drive shaft seal. The drive shaft is in great shape too. I'm still amazed at how different these two engines are and they're only a year apart, as the bolt sizes and some other parts are different. Now the other engine (1968 right) is the one stuck in gear. I turned the gear shift shaft and it doesn't take it out of gear. So it's something going on further down.

Here's a really bad drive shaft out of my old lower unit on my 35hp Merc.

I have a question that I have found to have several different answers. What gear should the lower unit be in when I go to put it back on? I realize I probably should have asked this before I took it off but I want to know for the next time I take it off. Some say reverse and others say forward and I bet others would say neutral. Both of my engines are in the neutral position, and the one functioning lower unit is in neutral now, and I have no idea what gear the other one is in. Can I just put it right back in? I do have the reverse tilt lock on both engines. Thanks
