" For Sale" 1980 Checkmate Enticer with 135hp Mercury

Well-known member
Guys,

I'm seriously considering parting with my 1980 Enticer (bought it in March 2011).
Only reason is I want something a bit bigger for next season (most likely another Check in the 21' size). My fear is that I won't find something as reliable as this cracker, but with a recent new member of the family, and a desire to run in bigger water, I need to do this.
I would love to keep it as it's been the best boat I've ever owned, and I think it looks the business with the metal flake and recent upholstery. Engine is turn key - just fuel up (premix) and go.

More details:
It's a 1980 Enticer 17', metalfalke orange/black.
I bought it from a Scream & Fly member. He in turn bought it from a S&F member that rebuilt the transom and floor about five years ago. It has a stock 135 Mercury (early '90s) that has been the best motor I've ever owned. The interior is also new. It's been a great boat which some of you have seen up close.

It has two bucket seats in front, a bench seat in back, and an open bow with seating for up to 6-7 in total. Great for cruising and skiing.
Previous owner has had it up to about 65mph. He reckoned it would probably go to 70+ with a different prop and a bit of jackplate adjustment. I’ve only managed 55mph this summer (only due to the chop on Hopatcong and Greenwood lakes in NJ/NY).

It’s a 135HP under a 200 cowling. The history is as follows (from previous owner):
“The guy I bought the boat from originally had a 150 HP and he blew the powerhead. It was under warranty, so Mercury replaced it for free, but he only wanted a 135HP. Not sure why. So they put the 135 powerhead on the 150 midsection/gearcase. He got his hands on this nicer 200 cowling, so he replaced the 150 cowl with this one.
As you are aware, this V6 line is all reasonably well interchangeable. All told, the motor is a 135 powerhead (the only modification is removal of the oil pump and reservoir in favor of premix), 150 midsection/production gearcase, 200 cowling.

The power trim works great, the gear lube is always fresh and it pumps water solidly, and the boat is equipped with Sea Star Hydraulic Steering.”

Included is the Laser II propeller. It works fine, but it could use some work. The original owner was a bit rough on it!!!
It sits on a Shoreline trailer with 2 new tyres and a spare.
I bought a red bimini for it, but have not secured it permanently (clamped to rail), so I may or may not include that depending on interest from potential buyer.

$3500 o.n.o.

How fast is the Enticer with the 135?

Good luck with the sale, she looks great!

I could easily get 55mph in a bit of chop, but didn't find enough flat water this summer to get faster. Previous owner claims over 65mph with possibly more after some jackplate adjustment.

Thanks.

This really is a sharp looking boat. My kids fell in love with the "sparkles" when Kris pulled up in front of our house. The interior is super clean and the motor runs great. A guy at work has been talking all summer about how he wants to get a Checkmate (once he saw the pics of mine he was hooked) but he's dragging his feet and is gonna miss out on a great boat.

No longer for sale.

I'd miss it too much for the money.

So I'll trick it out with a skipole, boarding ladder and new steering wheel for next season.

We gonna keep 'avin dem good times!

Back up for sale

How things change.....As I prepare to drive to southern VA to pick up a Starliner, the Enticer is back for sale here. Same details and price as before.

I had it out a few weeks ago for the first time of the season - started up straight away. I have replaced the gear oil in the last few weeks as well as draining the tank and fitted a fuel/water seprating filter.

As much as I'd love to keep it, SWMBO won't allow more than one boat on the drive here (I already have 2 back in Ireland ).

Thanks John.
We should have the two of them out next Monday on Hopatcong or maybe Greenwood by mid afternoon.

He might join us on my boat on Saturday for Philly.
