1989 Johnson 200 HP Questions

bartsboat

New member
I have an '84 Diplomat with a 140 Evinrude on it.

I bought an '89 Johnson 200 HP
J200TXCEA with the intention of re powering the 'Dip with it.

One bad thing, it is a 25" shaft. I do have a manual jack plate that has about 8"+ of travel to it. The motor will sit up so high since it is too big for the boat anyway. I do have dual cable rack steering that I am going to put on when changing the motor. I plan on installing the jack plate at that time also. The manual says the motor weighs 455 lbs. I think the BMA rating plate in the boat says 1150 lbs. cargo and gear, I am sure it says 7 persons - 140 HP. I also have a 21 gal fuel tank under the bench seat.

I have a midsection only, with the power trim unit from a 1991 Evinrude Fastrike 150HP E150GLEIS. This one is a 20" shaft model. Can I switch the upper drive shaft and shifting rod on the 200 lower unit, then put the 200 power head and lower unit on the 150 midsection? I don't have the 20" shaft or rod yet but I think I can find them. V-6's are different than V-4 shafts and shift rods right? I have some V-4 hardware I could use.

My son in law is a very good welder and works with a lot of machinists. I wonder if the inner exhaust housing from the 200 could be "chopped" and the center 5" or so removed? Then I should be able to replace the 150 midsection guts with the 200 guts.

It looks like the outer housing will work by looking at the BRP parts diagrams. I don't have any manuals for the '91. I have a '92-90 deg loop V models manual that seems to be pretty close with the parts on the '89.
(I couldn't find a specific manual for my '84 140 Evinrude either so I got a CD that covers 48-235 HP from '73 to '89. I just print out the pages I will be using when working on my 140, kind of a pain but it helps)

I haven't done anything on the 200. It is still out at a friends shop, he is going to paint it dark blue for me. I wanted to use the 150 midsection for the model #. Even though I have a 140 hp rating, 150 would be more reasonable than 200. The Johnson is white but my boat is dark blue with silver and blue metal flake. I want him to try to match up the dark Fastrike blue. I told him to cover the 200 tag on the back and put V-6 or something on. On the sides I told him to paint "Big Johnson" :sssh:

I should not have jumped the gun when I bought the 200. It seemed like a pretty good price but after shipping, the Land & Sea high performance heads I bought and what painting will cost, I'm not so sure. I wish I would have been patient and waited for a 20" 135-150 HP or something. The heads are unused and use 2 plugs per cyl. I will need dual coils when I put them on. Land & Sea says they can provide a 15-20% increase in HP (probably on a younger motor). I figured they are aluminum so I would cut some weight by using them ;). Ya gotta trim what ya can if you are gonna overpower right?

Seriously, what I would like to know is, am I going to rip the hind off of my boat or flip it over too easy or things like that? The original structure of the boat is very sound and I could sure brace it with heavy aluminum angle if needed. Has anyone put that size of outboard on a Diplomat? I read on here once that Diplomat hulls were designed for 60 mph tops. I would like to be able to reach that and cruise at less than WOT. If I can get more it would be alright too.

Any insight is duly appreciated.

Stop! Don't start butchering a bunch of perfectly good engines to try to "cobble" together something won't last and nobody else will EVER want even if lasts more than a year or two. What are you thinking?

The 91 OMC's are a 60 degree block and they ( READ THIS ALL YOU GEARHEADS!!) will NOT bolt on to a 90 degree /mid section -lower unit. It just won't work!!

The " Fastrikes" are a great motor. Plus the 90 degrees lend themselves to some great mods. But they are MUTUALLY EXCULSIVE!!

I'm with Groucho on this one. Even if you could swap out all the parts you really have too much weight hanging off the back of that little boat. It will porpoise and chine walk like crazy. Also, the fuel tanks are so small you will be filling up constantly.
If you want a 60 MPH cruise you could get it with small block V6. A Yamaha 150 pro-V would get you close.
My 130 gives me a stable ride criuse at 45 MPH. 55+ @ WOT.
What does your 140 do?

Way too much hassle for a few mph, like he said, the v4 90deg gearcase and v6 60deg block are not compatible. If you did somehow manage to frankenstein the motor, it would probably go to pieces before you reach cruising speed.

The only mod I would do on the 200 is to find a 20" mid & swap the powerheads. The drive shaft is no big deal, replace it or have the 25" shortened & the shift rod can just be cut off 5" and rethreaded. As for weight on the transom, a 20'' 200 will weigh the same as a 20" 150. Don't bother with the dual plug heads, they are not worth the trouble. The stock charging system does not produce enough power to effectively run 12 coils ( been there tried that on my V8), also they do not have t-stats & the motor runs cool & rich unless you are wide open. A stock loop charged 200 will be a huge power increase from a cross flow 140. By the way, I think I still have a 20'' drive shaft & shift rod from an 1987 XP 200. You can have it if I can find it.
