I have an '84 Diplomat with a 140 Evinrude on it.
I bought an '89 Johnson 200 HP
J200TXCEA with the intention of re powering the 'Dip with it.
One bad thing, it is a 25" shaft. I do have a manual jack plate that has about 8"+ of travel to it. The motor will sit up so high since it is too big for the boat anyway. I do have dual cable rack steering that I am going to put on when changing the motor. I plan on installing the jack plate at that time also. The manual says the motor weighs 455 lbs. I think the BMA rating plate in the boat says 1150 lbs. cargo and gear, I am sure it says 7 persons - 140 HP. I also have a 21 gal fuel tank under the bench seat.
I have a midsection only, with the power trim unit from a 1991 Evinrude Fastrike 150HP E150GLEIS. This one is a 20" shaft model. Can I switch the upper drive shaft and shifting rod on the 200 lower unit, then put the 200 power head and lower unit on the 150 midsection? I don't have the 20" shaft or rod yet but I think I can find them. V-6's are different than V-4 shafts and shift rods right? I have some V-4 hardware I could use.
My son in law is a very good welder and works with a lot of machinists. I wonder if the inner exhaust housing from the 200 could be "chopped" and the center 5" or so removed? Then I should be able to replace the 150 midsection guts with the 200 guts.
It looks like the outer housing will work by looking at the BRP parts diagrams. I don't have any manuals for the '91. I have a '92-90 deg loop V models manual that seems to be pretty close with the parts on the '89.
(I couldn't find a specific manual for my '84 140 Evinrude either so I got a CD that covers 48-235 HP from '73 to '89. I just print out the pages I will be using when working on my 140, kind of a pain but it helps)
I haven't done anything on the 200. It is still out at a friends shop, he is going to paint it dark blue for me. I wanted to use the 150 midsection for the model #. Even though I have a 140 hp rating, 150 would be more reasonable than 200. The Johnson is white but my boat is dark blue with silver and blue metal flake. I want him to try to match up the dark Fastrike blue. I told him to cover the 200 tag on the back and put V-6 or something on. On the sides I told him to paint "Big Johnson"
I should not have jumped the gun when I bought the 200. It seemed like a pretty good price but after shipping, the Land & Sea high performance heads I bought and what painting will cost, I'm not so sure. I wish I would have been patient and waited for a 20" 135-150 HP or something. The heads are unused and use 2 plugs per cyl. I will need dual coils when I put them on. Land & Sea says they can provide a 15-20% increase in HP (probably on a younger motor). I figured they are aluminum so I would cut some weight by using them
. Ya gotta trim what ya can if you are gonna overpower right?
Seriously, what I would like to know is, am I going to rip the hind off of my boat or flip it over too easy or things like that? The original structure of the boat is very sound and I could sure brace it with heavy aluminum angle if needed. Has anyone put that size of outboard on a Diplomat? I read on here once that Diplomat hulls were designed for 60 mph tops. I would like to be able to reach that and cruise at less than WOT. If I can get more it would be alright too.
Any insight is duly appreciated.
