253 guys, motor to hatch clearance

Hey guys, my boat is currently in storage and not really accessible until spring so I can't measure my own boat. Does anyone have any experience running a blower setup on a 253 and know how much space there is to work with?

This is for a carbed setup and I was also considering running a super chiller as well.

So my question is, will a blower/superchiller combo fit or just a blower or do I have no choice and have to cut the hatch to make it fit?

253 clearance

I have a 97 253 convincor with a 525sc clears the hatch fine. No idea if there is when adding achiller.

How does your boat run with the small 177 blower? I'm thinking that blower is going to be to small for my 502 but I can find them everywhere.

A 177 is too small for a 502. It was almost too small for a 454 but the factory 525sc 4-5 psi worked pretty well and made a good package. Going over about 6-7 psi on a 454 just makes waaaay too much heat. That is running it out of it's efficiency range.

Just throw a procharger on it. You get a water to air cooler and zero worries about hatch clearance. A lot easier on your outdrive too. Thats why i have one setting in my garage for my 253.

If I had an EFI motor I would be all over a Procharger but, with a carb setup I'm worried about having issues getting it dialed in.

Mine is carb'd as well. Ndaniels on here has a carb'd 454 mag with a M-3 procharger. And I have another buddy who shall remane nameless for now that is getting rid of his EFI setup to go carb'd with a procharger. Its a lot easier than you think. When you go to set it up, call Kunkels Marine up in Ontario Ohio, near Mansfield. He is awesome at setting those up. They have a 300 Convincor with a mountain motor and a big Procharger blowing through a carb. They set up my Dad's boat and did awesome. Plus they aren't far from ya.

hmmmm, something to think about. I'll stay opened minded and expand my search, I did find a 420 today and I'm going to call about. I wonder if it will fit :brickwall:

I love my 177 on my stock 454. 8 years now and no trouble. Had to raise the hatch on my 251 to clear and cut out the rear of the back seat for the t-stat housing and blower snout.I ran it with stock exhaust manifolds for a while, then got CMI headers...didn't gain much, maybe 1mph...then last year I installed the 525SC cam didn't gain much maybe 1/2mph.... I also have a friend that has 2 420's sitting in his garage. How much can you get your 420 for?

O, you must be talking about a 420 blower....sorry i was thinking Mercruiser 420's...my buddy has 2 mercruiser 420's in his garage...not blowers...my bad

Totally different boat, but my hatch was modified to accept my blowers. I basically have 2 cotouts over the top of my flame arrestors(like they used the bottom of 5 gallon buckets as molds) when I upholstered I had 2" of very stiff foam laid in first around the cut outs then another 2" of softer foam over the top. My sunpad is totally useable, just a thought? Here's a link for my web album if my hatch wasn't open you'd never know I had blowers.

Very nice updates, I may have to do the same with my hatch if I run a bigger blower or chiller.

Thanks for the compliment. That pic was part of a photo punch list for the upholstery guy, I had to laugh when I saw it blown up. Also don't be afraid of the 177, that's all that are on top of my 502's

weiand 177

Jazzy just curiou what are you seeing for boost#'s and are you running stock pulleys? Im debating on trying some different ones. Will have to wait and see what im getting come spring. Just got blower back from blower shop. I was only seeing about 3psi max

I never hooked up a boost gauge so I'm not sure, and I bought the boat setup that way so I never looked into pulleys. What I can say is that it is 8-9 mph faster than it would be with stock hp 500's. Possibly a little more, I just had the blowers rebuilt last season and seemed like I had more power, but I didn't get out much to play with it so I don't know if I could pull more Rpm's than before?
