26' Checkmate Persuader planing problem

Magnum Thunder

New member
Help-

Looking for someone to tell me what prop came with a 1996 26' Checkmate Persuader with a 454 Magnum stock motor and Bravo 1 drive. The boat is a slug coming out of the hole. Trim is all the way down. Top end is 58-60 MPH @ 4400 RPM's. I am currently running a Mirage Plus 14.625 X 23 pitch and I have the large vent plugs installed on the prop. Do I have too much prop, timing issue, or map sensor problem? Boat runs great when it finally come up on plane. :irked:

Prop down....too much boat for a 23p considering you are at 385hp. Prop it so it runs around 4800-5000 WOT. 21p will probably do it or maybe a 22p Bravo. -Craig

you should step down to a 21p prop. i beleive max rpms should be 44-4800 rpm - that should bring you up to the high end of the range and help your planing issues

If the prop suggestions don't help much, verify that the engine is tuned right. If it has a lot of hours check the leakdown, and go from there. If the engine is otherwise good you could always add a BLOWER:banana:

Hmmmmm. if that's actual 'GPS' speed of 58-60 mph, I think that is good. If it's speedo speed, then you may actually be doing some a lot less which is bad. The rpm's are too low. But that prop seems right for a Mag engine. I would make sure it's running correctly first. If it's running correctly go to a 21 Mirage Plus. The Bravo One prop is Larger diameter and a 4 blade, so that will really bring down your rpm's. It's a little confusing to me because I think that a 385 hp Mag should turn a 23 Mirage on your boat,....unless you've got a lot of weight in it somewhere.

Old Navy n BB have good advice - how long since tune-up? Better to leve the stock prop alone until yur sure the power is a constant. The pitch is right-on-the-money for that boat with stock power and I would suspect the engine is tired.

I wouldd drop a few bucks on ignition before I played with the propping.

Hey
Navy-

The engine has 260 hours on it and it's tight. A blower doesn't sound too bad. What kind of HP gain could I expect? I bet it would leap out of the hole!:eyecrazy:

I would try a Bravo One 4 blade in a small pitch (22-24)....the smaller diameter prop will help it spool up quicker and the xtra blade will help you maintain speed at lesser rpms. It should be very close in top end to your Mirage.

If that motor has good internals, I think that a procharger at moderate boost would probably go 550 (possibly more) and be user friendly. A friend of mine has one on an EFI motor and it runs great. My motor has a carb and the Weiand 177 blower works well which gets my big heavy boat on plane quickly.
