283 convincor questions

Hi everyone, new to the site as well as new to my checkmate. I have I 1994 convincor 283. It has a 548ci, pushing 660hp at 5500 and 694 ftlbs at 4200. It has a xr upper and a -2 imco shorty with a 26 pitch prop. Has anyone had any experience with 3 blade props? It seems I'm getting to much stern lift and can't get the hull out of the water enough to get good speed. Trimming out just results in blowing out the prop. So far I've spun it out to 5000 with 3 adults and 3 teenagers. Also where is the fuEl sending unit in this boat? The po said that when it gets to 1/2 tank it's empty. But sitting on the trailer it's reading 1/3 tank. I'd like to pull it out and ohm the float out. Thanks in advance

The sending unit to the 130 gl tank is under the back seat. As far as the drive height goes, maybe try a spacer and space it down until it works . My 283 used a standard bravo lower and never exibited any bad behavior. I don't know anyone running a 3 blade prop, Bravo 1 seems to be the prop of choice. You should try a 28 pitch or even a 30 lab B1 on the boat once you get the drive height dialed in.

Yes what Old Navy said. I have been told by an extremely experienced Checkmate speed shop to not waste my time or money on a 3 blade for my 283. So far a labbed 28 Bravo has worked the best for me and still able to spin it to 5300 rpm with a little less power than you are running. If you are planning to keep the shorty drive I would try to borrow a 5 blade to try at that height although they usually provide more stern lift . I would think you might be able to turn a 30 labbed bravo also . Keep us posted.

I ran a 3 blade on my 300/283. It was the only prop that worked at higher speeds. It sounds like your shorty is not working if you're lacking trim leverage. The more blades you run the more stern lift you'll induce.

Thanks guys. I'm still working the bugs out of it from the po. I figured I needed a 28 or 30 pitch. Mechanic at work said to ditch the b1 and get a 3 blade but that might not be the best choice from what you guys are saying.
Old Navy I didn't realize the fuel tank was that big. I thought it was 75 gallon. Anyone have any idea what I should see for mph out of it?

Maybe try a 29 Mirage if you can find one to try. I had good luck running a 27" 3 blade on my old 235 . If I were to guess I would say 75 ish mph.

Bill, maybe you should tell the OP about the"higher speeds" and HP you saw so he does not get sidetracked. HAHA. A lot of us are slow...

Well I've had the boat out almost every weekend since I bought it. Getting used to it. How it handles, working bugs out. The 26p bravo 1 just had to much stern lift with the shorty. Bow steer was down right scary at times at speed. I bought a mirage plus 27p as per local guys telling me it would work. It was the worst purchase. The only thing I gained was bow lift and no more bow steer in rough chop or wakes. First thing I noticed was the boat was slower while idLing in gear. It blew out so bad I could barely get it on plane. Then had prop slip so bad it wouldn't go. I could trim up farther and it would throw a hell of a rooster tail. Best I could get the boat to do with the mirage plus was 5200-5300 rpm wot and 58mph with a good rooster tail. Horrible slip. I saw 68mph with the 4 blade and still had throttle and speed to go. I have gone faster but I don't know the mph and had to get out of it do to uncontrolled scary bow steer. I'm using my phone GPS for now. I'm thinking about a hydromotive q iv x prop in a 27, 28,29 pitch. Has anyone ran one of these? Do they give bow lift like stated? How about top end?

I'd give BBlades a call and explain in detail everything you've experienced...prop testing can be frustrating!

I've got a 28 Maximus 5 blade for sale. Totally different boats, but I spun it to just under 5000 rpm at 78mph with a light load. It's labbed by Mercury.

ok, the shorty lower is wrong for you with that power, you can try a mirage+ I tested one, did give 1-2 mph over a bravo 1, but was not a good prop overall, if you want to loose the stern lift as is try a hydromotive, but I think you are going to better off with a std height lower and a bravo 1 4 blade, also is your transom notched ?

No transom is not notched . I Ran a mirage plus 27 and it was horrible. Only thing it did was get rid of bow steer. Check my previous post about it. Bblades wants to lab my 26 bravo1. Not sure about that.

So I took some measurementsort while on the phone with the guys at checkmate. Great bunch of guys. I'm at 4.25" propshaft centerline below the keel. They say it's to high and I need to drop the lower down. They also said that from where the cav plate is sitting from the bottom that it could have been ordered with a higher x dimension than normal given the factory engine that it was ordered with. I was told they leave the factory with 12-14% prop slip. And that with my power I should turn mid 80s. Guess I need to find a spacer and test again.
