I've actually been putzing around with a little history page of sorts. Some weekend I'll probably get it finished up and add it to the site. I've got some old screen shots saved of the old Eve board and a number of the old graphics that will be part of it.
The short story/history behind the site is as follows...
Before we had the site...
I was emailing some Checkmate pics back and forth with some members who frequented the old Checkmate bulletin board. (The one that got all spammed up on the official site.) One of the members I was corresponding with mentioned that it would be nice to have our own "real" Checkmate message board. It just so happened, that at the time I was an admin on a friends message board. So on a rainy day in September while I was sitting at the cottage kitchen table (unable to go boating due to the rain) I more or less put together our first site. It was basically a pretty simple EZboard. I put up a notice on the old Checkmate bulletin board with a link to the message board inviting people to pop in, say hello and post a pic or two of their boat.
JW and Gus joined up almost right away. After a couple of months on the old EZboard, we had around 25 members or so and I had run out of personal webspace for holding pics which was all we had for server space, so we moved from the old EZboard to our own host with Infopop running Eve software. At that point I purchased the domain name Checkmate-Boats.com as CheckmateBoats was already owned by someone else. And we officially moved to the new domain and board in early November of '02.
And what you see now is more of less the result of the little seeds we planted.
But let me tell you this. Without the efforts, hard work and support of JW, Gus and without the support of Greg I seriously doubt we would exist as you see us today. The reason is pretty simple. It's hard to get a message board going. In fact it's really, really hard. And probably the hardest part is getting the ball rolling initially. Once you have a core of people, it's much easier, but when it's just a few, it's hard. What got us rolling was a couple of things.
First, I knew about a ten people from the Mate Bulletin board. So that gave us about eight or nine members. Secondly and more importantly, JW & Gus had a bunch of contacts they knew from Scream and Fly. And JW and Gus were able to encourage enough people to join up from Scream and that was really what got us going. And to Greg's credit, he allowed JW to more or less plug our site on Scream. And just for that alone, we owe Greg an ENOURMOUS amount of thanks. Thanks Greg!
It goes without saying most webbies just wouldn't allow someone to pimp another message board on their forums. Greg allowed us to do that. And that explains why I get a little testy when I see Greg taking heat. Because he's definitely one of the good guys out there. Greg has always offered his help to us. Always.
So bascially what you see today is result of the little seed that was planted at my cottage table on a rainy day and then nutured by JW, Gus and myself.
