83 Merc 150 Stator Question

Older merc experts, I need some input here. The last time I had my boat out the motor suddenly fell flat on its face. There were some things that led me down the path of checking the ignition system. According to the book testing between the blue & red leads and the blue/white and red/white leads should give between 5400 and 6200 ohms. Well, the outer switch box leads (b/w & r/w) showed 6220 right on the money and never moved. The other leads (r & w) were all over the map, sometimes in the proper range and sometimes not, but the meter never stopped changing. Based on my electrical experience that's a pretty good indication the Stator is bad but curious on your thoughts. Thank you and happy boating this weekend.

Ive had stators act the same way, usually the low side. if you're not getting a good ohm reading its junk. the winding have shorted, I have replaced 3 on my old merc.I have always replaced them with merc parts but I hear the CDI are just as good or better, and they have a trouble shooting guide on there website. it may help you out.
