84 Exciter couple Questions..

New member
Hows it going, Been on here lurking for a few weeks now awesome site!!
Anyway just got a 85 exciter with a v6 merc 150 on the back.
Right now I have a dookie aluminum 21 pitch michigan wheel
I want to buy a new ss prop I herd all around better.
Question is..... should I stay at 21 pitch? Right now im at 55 mph at 6100 rpm I know I know... im just abusive!!

Also stupid question but........ There is not any cleats on deck of bow. Only cleats are aft of seats.
What do you guys tie up with.... The grab rail?
Thanks Guys!!!!!

:welcome:Welcome to the forum. You're in the right place to get the answers to both of your questions. I'm sure someone will come along shortly and give you the input you're looking for. Enjoy your new boat. Jim

:welcome:
Has the deck been redone? I find it hard to believe the boat came without cleats there. Anyhow you can buy new cleats and replace them. I wouldn't tie to the rail it will bend pretty easy.

Just looked thru the 84 gallery and it seems not many models did have bow cleats.
I'd put some on. The rails will pull out if there the ones just screwed on.

The 82 Exciter I just (sorry folks) crushed had them on the same spot as on my 86 Enchanter - on the deck just in front of the windshield on both sides.

As to your prop, I ran as high as a 25 pitch SS prop on my Predictor with a Merc V6 150, and based on my powerplant swaps between Predictor, Eluder and Enchanter (they all run about the same speed with the same power and the same prop) I would guess you could do the same.

Same here, 86 exciter and no cleats forward of the rear seats, I do just use the grab rail to tie off the front. It is a sturdy rail just make sure the plastic nuts under the bow aren't stripping out, I put new ones on when I reattached the rail and it seems pretty solid. I dont know about prop pitch and all but I am seeing similar speeds without having a working trim motor on my 150 yamaha.
How about some pics!!

Hey thanks for the replies..
Was out all day had a good time 3 adults and one child it runs a solid 55. Def want to get a prop
only a month left here in ct for boating.. then she comes in garage for full restore.
ahhhh how do I post pics..

My 81 only has the cleats in the back also. I always use the bow eye to tie to a dock. When I'm running the rope comes over the bow and I tie it to the pass grab handle.

As for props: do you have a jack plate? I'm running a 6" hydraulic jack plate. 200hp 2.4L with a 1.87 lower unit with low water pickup. Last weekend I tried out my new 25p trophy worked by DAH. Consistent 71 mph everytime I went out with more to go but I always had a passenger.
I'm going to take a stab and say your 150 is a 2.0L with a 2:1 lower. So I would probably start out with a 23p trophy or laser.
Where are you from? Someone near you might be willing to let you try some of their props to help you figure out what you need.

Well boat is in garage now... all done for this year.
So far I love boat.
Now the fun begins....
Full restoration, floor , transom, upholstery/carpeting.
Will start new thread with updates.
But how can I upload pics???

Hi, I've got an 86' exciter. It's got a cleat up front, looks like it came with it from the factory but I can't know for sure. I have a 5.5" jack plate and a 175 efi, with I had a 2:1 case (with a nose cone) on the motor for a while this summer while I had my stock case rebuilt, and I ran a 25p laser II. It could get to 6000 rpm and about 63 mph gps so I think 23-25 would be a good place to start with your setup.
