85 Predictor

I just took the mid section off the supposedly running powerhead. After that give me a small or big block Chevy. I could of tore it apart and rebuilt it in the time it took to split the two.

It looks like a typical leg that has spent it life in salt water. I have one salt water parts motor and two fresh water. You really notice the difference. But for the money you spent, it's all good. :thumb:

Well I have one sheet of 3/4" and a sheet ot 1/2" to start rebuilding. Now I have to save up a little to order the glass. Ill start building the stringer and pre fitting everything soon.

Well I messed around with the motor that's hanging on her today. The compression test at wot is cyl 1=120 #2=127 #3=127 #4=90 #5=110 #6=135. I had it sitting for a week after spraying the cylinders with pb blaster and marvel. Then for shots and giggles I put the plugs back in and dropped the fuel line in to a gas jug with pre mix....she fired right up after sitting for 4yrs. Then the wife came home from work. So ill tinker with her a little more and let her run for a little bit with water flowing then do another compression test to see if she gets better.

This weekend I check the compression again after running a few gallons through her with sea foam mixed in. All the numbers stayed the same except #4 cyl went up to 95. She runs but bogs, stumbles, and sounds like she's misfiring here and there. I left that alone and went back to wetsanding and buffing. I'm about 1/2 way done with that. If anyone can guide me on what I should do with the motor on her it would be helpful. I don't know whether to keep messing with it or pull it apart and give it a hone and ring job.

have you checked the head bolts? I had one cylinder that was low and I torqued the head boats and fixed the low compression in my one cylinder.

Thanks for the input. Im torn on which way to go still. I have to replace the lower unit so I may end up going through it this winter. As for timing this is a distributorless engine so I'm not sure if it could be timed. The carbs for sure need to be cleaned since it last ran 4 yrs ago. I don't even want to mess with the other engines I bought. I will most likely part them out or sell them as is. On selling the extras I will have to do some research on the real values so I don't ask too much or give them away.

Even though it has a distributor it still has to be timed . Some people call it the link and sync . I have to 150 hp inlines both are set at 21 degs before top dead center. Actually my 150 I had rebuilt is set at 23 begs before top dead center . But I run premium fuel in mine .

I will have to check the timing and clean the carbs and start fresh with that. Then ill be doing powerhead swaps to the good mid and lower over the next month. I'm going to try and get the second engine running and sell it to recop some of my money before winter to put that money into the glass and what not. The wife is sick of the boat and doesn't want me spending any money right now on it. I told her you won't be next year when we are relaxing on the water.

My buddys wife is the same with him . She want him to sell both boats and jet ski lol.

Just make sure when you got to swap out power heads that they have the same bolt pattern . In 1973 they changed the bolt pattern from 10 bolts to 8 bolts . But if its a 73- and up it will bolt up ... Im pretty much finished with my Vmate I resto and will probably be starting another Checkmate project I have waiting ... and will use another inline ...

They are both 8 bolts. Good luck on the next project. All this boat talk is foreign language to me but its a learning process. Since I'm a car guy I probably would of had an I/O running perfect in an afternoon.

If you decide you want to have one rebuilt there is a guy in south Carolina that does a great job with the inlines . I sent mine down and he did what he had to do and shipped it right back all in a weeks time .

Thanks for the offer. I'm a mechanic so I build and maintan everything myself. The only thing I don't fix or do anything mechanical too is my wife's hyundai since its under warranty. Ill figure it out and getting going...Its a pride thing too.
