BIG CHECKMATES ?????

BRED- What does it cost to make a reliable 540ci Chevy/ ( or a Procharged 502) and drive at around 650-700 hp? That's what I'm guessing it would take to run 90 mph in a single 30' Convinor. And would it be a turn key boat for the regular guy who doesn't want to wrench?

My 300X motors are pretty much b- proof....I just wish they had the fuel economy of the 300XS Opti. I know there are alot of guys that don't like OBs on a bigger boat but I think you'll see alot more of them in the future. Especially when the XS motors are only around 15K new w/ a warranty. (The 30X motors were closer to 19-20K) Plus, alot of guys want the extra back up of another motor. In fact, i know of one guy considering a 30' w/ Verados.

Cheers-

i would think that the 24' o/b would be pretty good in rough water w/ 22* hull as for the the fuel economy its relative to hp to weight ratio . you need the hp to get it movin so every boat can be underpowered o/b or i/o ! i'm happy w my set up but i think i'd benefit w/ more hp on my pulse , i was hopin to go to a new rig this year, but some health issues put that off .

Was out on Lake Cumberland this weekend with the 20' Enchanter with a 225 Merc and spent around $350 in gas. If I had taken our 26' Persuader that has a 454 mag in it we would have spent $250 and not been tossed around like a lightning bug in some kids jar.
But sometimes being tossed all over is part of the fun (my wife says its not part of the fun).

Here you go big guy Kunkels Flammed 300 will run 83.4 with out any testing 3/4 of a tank of fuel which holds 120 gallons and 5 people. This boat has not been wound tight yet because its still new. It has a 12500.00 crate engine GM 572 pump gas all day and user freindly. Now bolt on your pro charger and dial it in and see how fast it will run.

And the best part is you do not have to baby it out of the hole because it won't blow out.

And you know SCT that if Kunkels will use a engine its a good engine. They don't build no crap

I have nothing against a outboard the best trouble free boat I have ever owned was a outboard. I just like the sound of a healthy Big Block. I just don't think a outboard is any better on fuel

I guess I kinda started this IO vs. OB debate.....Sorry.
I was just pointing out that the fuel efficiency in the new OB's could be a reason why there is less sale in the BIG I/O department...

This is a great thread, I think it is peculiar that many of the new boats that we see come to the forum are OutBoards, yet most of what I see on my local rivers and lakes for new boats are IO's.

I wonder if this is an accurate observation. Kip could tell us how many I/O's have been sold this year.

Let the debate continue!!!!

OH Yeah,

I just don't think a outboard is any better on fuel

2 or 3 years ago I agreed with you 100%, but with the introduction of the E-Tec, Optimax, and Verado motors (plus all the foriegn imports that can probably run on piss nevermind gas) the game has completely changed from a fuel consumption standpoint.

And just for the record. I LOVE THE SOUND OF A BIG BLOCK TOO!!!!:surf:

What I found on the net if you want to run the 600hp 540 complete package which includes the drive Bravo XR. 22000.00 They claim with a procharger at 5psi you will get a added 200 hp.

I agree this is a great thread BR

I wonder how much of the decrease in sales of big boats is simply that people have reducing the money theyll put into fun. Obviously more noticeable recently, but even looking at housing and everything around here, people have been cuttin back over the last several years.

I also love the sound of a sweet big block, but worry thats on its way out (long before Ill be able to pony up the cash for one). I know around here theres a ton of big boats, especially up by winni for sale, Im guessing partly cause of gas, but also since they just passed the 40 mph speed limit try out on winni, not that I would abide by it, but the water cops are gonna notice (and def hear cause of the big block) and probably target a fountain, checkmate type boat hauling ass down the lake way before me. Plus as much as I like the sound of a big block the prissy homeowners are always whining, and getting decibel limits put on lakes all over the place.

Its a tough life owning one of those, but Im glad someone is willing to own the boats thatll turn my head when I hear it comin! :bounce:

In the end I don't really think it matters. The boat we all own right now mostly fits our life styles or what we can afford. Its a toy some people choose to tie a lot of money up in BS car payments when we all can make due just fine with a 99 Honda civic or a 95 single cab long bed pickup. And a lot of big boats are for sale because a lot of high paying jobs are being lost. I don't really think its gas consumption of the big boats its job loss.

Instead of going 4 times a month I cut back to 2 times a month. Its not only gas its food, cloths, beer, oil, tires, and everything else that has ski rocketed because of oil prices.

I am not going to sell my boat and buy a smaller one just because of gas prices. I will leave it in my garage till I have enough to go.

I agree fully. Just spent the weekend at Mackinac Island Michigan. It cost a couple bucks but it was worth it. Got to go work for something good.

Old Navy affordable marine is selling the

GM 540 marine 600hp gen. 6 for 10695.00
GM 572 marine 675hp gen. 4 for 10995.00 tall deck

If you buy the complete package with drive they will give you hyd. steering for 450.00 I did not price steering before because it should be the same for inboard and outboard

Complete package 572 or 540 under 23000.00 all NEW parts

My 496 is not the greatest on fuel but it really is not that bad. For a 30' boat, I am glad I need only one engine. It is big enough and can still use a Chevy 1500 to pull it.

I think it may be more of a frame-of-mind thing that leads most people to believe they are better with an outboard than a i/o it may or may not have much merit because every engine is different and some OB's are much better at some things than some I/O's are and the other way around, too. Some could look at the weight of an I/O boat + Engine and OB boat + engine with comperable HP and figure they will get better performance with one or the other.

If I went with a smaller boat I would go outboard. But on a Convincor, ZT, Enforcer you would need 2 outboards to push it. Plus I like the swim platform on the back of a boat.

I picked up a '99 28' Convincor earlier this year with twin 454 EFI Mags. I'm on LOTO and, with the rough water, I had also looked at 31' Cigs, 29'-38' Scarabs, 29'-31' Formulas, etc. I had a budget to work with but wanted something that could handle the rough. I also didn't want to jack with a modded boat, considering this is my first real performance boat. The Convincor was on the small end of my choices, but it was clean, stock, original owner, and 113 hours. I liked the performance numbers and it did it with stock big blocks at 385hp each at the prop. The boat just fit my needs, ok, DESIRES at this point. We don't really need boats, do we? Therefore, we get what speaks to us.
I don't have much to compare it to since I haven't ridden in another Checkmate or too many other performance boats, but I like it and I've gotten compliments on the ride. I've learned a lot this year about handling the rough water and it's a blast. I've hammered along with my friend's boats (38' Cig Top Gun, 40' Excalibur Hawk, 42' Fountain Lightning) in some rough water, but they obviously have an edge on me. Still a great time to try to make up for the gap with some driving technique and guts. :bigthumb:
And firing up TWO big blocks is just WAY too cool.

Need is based on necessity and availability. If you NEED a stress relief, it is necessary to release it. If boating is available in your area and you have a budget that can make it work, then :surf:. At least that's how I explained it to my divorce attorney :D.
