boating on rivers?

hey, anybody here put there checks on rivers? I love river fishing and i would like to use my trimate II on the missouri river in NW missouri KC area. I am just concerned because of the extra dangers and such present in an always-changing rivers such as low-head dams sandbars and submerged logs. Any advice for doing this, or anybody thinking NO, DONT DO IT!? any advice appreciated. i would go slow, not much more than an idle up river, then float down river. what do you all think?

we do alot of river cruising , i always run slower 1st time back in after being out of it for a over a week, plus run off after heavy rains ,current flows always gets the dead heads to rise !

i go into the hudson river all the time. its bigger thank most but still a river. i say go for it. ask a few locals for shallow areas.

Its a boat, Right! I run the Detroit River ( its really a striaght)and the only thing I worry about is floaters & freighters!

I'm heading off now!!!!!!!!!!!! :thumb:

I say check with the locals...I ussually flag down a guy that looks like he has a fast boat and ask him chances are he'll help you out and even show you some hot spots........I do tihs on All Rivers or lakes...........

true plus , they'll know the sand bars , rock piles . dredge dump off ! i still can't believe they do this ,but alot of local groups are trying to get em to put in 1 area form a new island/ sand bar area !

I run most of the time in the river... some up high where the water is skinny and there's always things floating down - when going to run fast there, i normally run it once fairly slow then fly going the other way. going down stream 10 miles or so it's tidal river crab pots all over the place old pilings and so forth... then another 20 miles or so and it's open sound... still shallow areas and lots bigger water.

Most of the guys that run up in the skinny part of the river just know that once in a while they're goig to hit stuff. and I routinely see checks, a nice little donzi and then the weekend racers / tunnel hull crowd with the stvs, allisons, etc... one of the guys running a fast quartershot recently hit a submerged log or something and literally lost the side of the housing on his gearcase...

Oh and for the tricky areas, I just pick a nice sunday afternoon to sit out and watch other people go by... some will show you where to go, others will show you where not to.

Are you talking about a big river that has other boats on it, or a stream that normally isn't used for boating?

I'm guessing that the missouri is pretty big, right?

If other guys use it, yeah, go for it! I love running rivers with the mate!
