Chine Walk fix

I have a 21' CD Pulsare .... it has a 250 ProXS (12" setback & hyd JP). This boat would start chine walking around 65mph range. People suggest that dealing with this requires driving expertise & seat time .... I'm not a "professional" boat driver, and I personally couldnt see doing this as the boat seemed scary-unstable when the walking started in.

Through a bunch of experimentation, I found the following combo did work;

1/ got rid of SmartTabs (.... these did not work. I tried a lot of different settings and talked to their factory guys ..... but nothing made them fix the chine walk problem). I instead installed a Bennett hydraulic tab system. This system helped a lot.

2/ a 4 blade prop. I run a Bravo 1 XS 25P .... but I found my Trophy+ 24P worked just as well. The 3-balde tempest 26P seemed to bring the walking on at lower speeds and it seemed more aggrevated to me.

3/ a larger setback .... I went to 12 1/2" from 5 1/2".

This combo seems to allow me to run without chine walking. I have had it "stably" up to 80 Mph. It still isnt quite at wot at that point, bt its close.

Good job! Thanks for the info.
In my experience the surest cure for chine walking is marriage.

Good job! The 'walk' is about the most annoying thing when you are trying to go reeeall fast.

Hey Eboch, I have also found that the higher I was able to raise the motor height the less chine walk there was. Jackplate all the way down chine walk was terrible. All the way up propshaft about 1.5 inches below pad was minimal. Was able to get 83 gps once with some driving effort. Couldnt duplicate it. 81 82 all the time. 2011 2100 pulsare LD, 250 Proxs, 15 inches of set back. Im running a 27 fury right now stock. Keep us updated on top speed. Bug.

+1 for nasty. When I'm 3+" below the pad the chine walk is worse than 1" below.

x2. Engine height seems to make the biggest difference. Part of it has to do with the fact that when you run the engine higher you will use less trim. 3" below pad, trimmed right out is a invitation to dance.

This is where a hydraulic plate would be nice. Cruising at 1" below is loud and inefficient.

Im not 100% sure of this. I think the higher the engine is the less torque is thrown off by the prop. The torque of the motor is what I think starts the chine walk in the first place. Pulls the hull off center when it gets high enough out of the water and the fun begins. Walking from side to side.

Swap the Trophy +24 for a Trophy +26. RPMs will come down, top speed will increase. You could also add Bob's 2" spacers to increase your total setback to 14.5" (providing you have enough cable/hose lengths). Make sure your steering is tight (bleed your hyd. steering and get the air out).

If it's a boat you don't have to drive that you want, buy a cat.... Best part about my Pulsare's was that noone else could drive my boat as fast/stable as I could.

I had a lot of beer drinkin WOT practicing! Lessons available, 12 oz payments accepted!

Next year when I get my 'Flite done we'll have to see if we can get a Checkmate party up north somewhere! :bigthumb:

sounds like a plan!:bigthumb:

i got a hold of hotbeek, and we are going to take my boat out and see what im doing wrong! I ether over correct the wheel or im catching it to late!

The walking is definitely better with the engine jacked up. Right now, I cant move it up as far as I'd like .... i.e. I dont quite have the rigging setup ideally for getting enough lift and optimizing holeshot. I have to take the boat out of the water and get my engine hoist on it ...... which I dont want to do in the middle of the season (I'll try that in a few months).

Im running a 25P Bravo 1 XS prop on the 250 ProXS. I use this boat for skiing as well as speeding. This combo is really good at pulling a slalom skier out of the hole .... even with 4 adults in the boat and a full tank of gas .... so I dont really want to go to higher pitch. As long as I can go around 80mph with the boat feeling "solid", thats enough for me. This combo seems to be able to do that.

Cheers
