CMC Jackplate Rebuild Info. Needed

Hi Guys,

I found a used CMC 5.5" setback hydraulic jackplate for sale near me. The seller said it needs guide washers and that it also takes 40 seconds to move through the full stroke. He said his new CMC only takes 23 seconds. I think I could get the plate and a switch for $300, but I'm not sure what parts will cost if the pump needs to be rebuilt.

I think the guide washers are on the 4 bolts in the slots between the 2 halves. WIth the plate off the boat, this seems like a very easy fix.

But a tired pump could be the seals or electric motor issues or?? - I could dig into either of them, but not sure what parts will cost and how available they are. A brand new pump on top of the $300 will end up being right up there with buying a new jackplate... so I don't see the point in getting this thing if that's my only option.

Any adice? Anyone ever tear into the pump or actuator on these?

PS - I should be picking up the starliner in about a week!!!! Will still have the interior holes, but new windshield and repaired gel. He ended up buffing out the whole boat and said it looks GOOD... So far I have nothing but good things to say about Kevin Brown of Lakeway Boat Repair.

I got a used CMC 6 in jack plate and the electric motor was bad ( don't tap it or you won't be able to get it re-built-- outer wall is thin magnets-- but I took it to a good electric repair shop that builds starters and alternators they re-built my motor and only charged me 35-40$

Hi Reed - I missed your reply to this thread somehow. Thanks for the info!

It looks like your CMC is one of the older ones with the remote pump. I'd guess the same thing would be true for the integrated pump / actuator units?

Personally I would look on ebay, you can get a near new one for $350.00 to $500.00 is you look for awile.I would not spend that kind of money for something that was'nt working right. My two cents anyway.

Every time I have seen or had to rebuild and CMC jack plate the parts are worth more than replacing it. I agree, look around and find one in good shape. the last one I took apart all the bolts were seized and we ended up scrapping it.

Hi Guys,

I went to look at it and it is 'uh well used. $200 is manual jackplate territory so it is priced appropriately.

Zach - yeah, CMC sells guide washers and all small parts at a reasonable price. A rebuilt (20 second) actuator/pump unit is $200, a new (8 second full stroke version) is $300. So even at $450, for a totally rebuilt unit - I felt it was a pretty descent deal.

The problem is that one of the main guide bolts holes is stripped in the aluminum plate. Hard to explain if you haven't seen one, but bottom line it needs a major piece of Al to be replaced. Not sure of the price, or if CMC even sells it, but it probably makes the unit worth about $100. I believe the seller honestly didn't know it was stripped - he said he would not sell it as is, and will replace the piece if it's available and still sell at $200.

After looking at the way it's built, I'm not sure I want a CMC anymore. the guide bearings beat into the aluminum pretty baddly. It's probably not a big deal and maybe all jackplates are made that way, but I need to research a bit more. The owner ran his bass boat in lake st. clair in rough water and admitted it was pretty beat, but it just didn't look good.

Does anyone know if detweiler's use the same set up?
