Doug Smith comes CLEAN

I hope I was not taken the wrong way.
I think that all of us have an opinion but the wrongful bashing of DS.and Checkmate in general is a little overboard.

Like it has been stated before. If there are new Checkmates out there that are built poorly nobody's talking.
I am not putting down your boat nor am i bashing ds.I am just stating the facts.I wish that the ds checkmate people would speak up and let us know there side but it doesn't look like many are out there.

As for my sources i won't say who they are.The quality issues i know about are that the gel coat is so thin it just has one side and the chopper gun ain't the checkmate way.As for the molds, they were long out of production and had no use for anyone. When they cleaned out the Baja plant they were hauled to the landfill. You can put all the bells and whistles on them you want ,but the core construction and hull design make the boat!
So it's all about the He said She said bullsh_ _.
No real proof?:poke:

The proof is sitting on checkmates lot with cracks in them. I believe a couple dealers got them as well. I know its a bow rider but not sure the model (maybe the brx 2000?).

End of discussion

Hey Kip

Hey Kip are the new checkmates being built with the same quality as before Doug Smith bought the company?

Wow... what happend to the discussion here?

I leave the board for 2 days to have some fun and come back to this?:D

im trying to have a dialog..im not looking for any trouble or trying to insult anyone, check my post count , i want real answers and pics of the trouble and lack of quality you guys are talking about. my friend has a 2000 259 and he runs it hard but does not abuse his boat and guess what he has cracks around the dash and all around the rubrail , yes i can get pics, wont be until spring.. also my 1997 253 had a few cracks within 20 hrs of use. the area around the portapot had huge cracks... so far i have no cracks on my 2008,25hrs.. but again im only here to learn but i need facts not bs . on any other website people post pics of the trouble they are talking about.also not any cracks or defects in my 2008 zt 240 which had about 50rs at trade in.

jln, I've heard the same things about the same boats from the same person as Brian and Berry.. and that person saw it himself. I don't have any pics and haven't laid eyes on them... and thats the reason I didn't make a big deal of it. Decided to bring it up while we're on the topic of the new ownership and boat designs, because I thought it fit- otherwise, I wouldn't have mentioned it. This was supposed to be on a few brand new boats- like, brand new.

Call it bs if you want.. you won't hurt my feelings... but when I heard about it, I didn't consider it BS.

thanks for your reply, i wont call bs hopefully i dont have any issues with my new boat. only time will really tell. so far so good . but i cant say that i have heard anything really wrong with the ds era checkmates but its still very early to tell. i hope they withstand the test of time.

Thats cool.. I'm sure that your ZT280 will be a great boat for a very long time.

I almost bought one when I was looking at larger boats.:thumb: (ended up with the 24SB instead.)

We all want checkmate to survive the test of time. We are loyal to the name and product and thats what we worry about IF ITS TRUE about what Nick, Barry, and I have all heard. However I will say its a very reliable source
but i cant say that i have heard anything really wrong with the ds era checkmates but its still very early to tell.
I would say as the years go by, they will find more ways to "tighten up the belt" Gel, resign, and glass is the only way they can do it other than interior materials.

Like i said earlier, not trashing anyones boat. This thread just confirms that Baja molds were used. I would love to hear from someone who has a "beckmate" and hear what they have to say, good or bad. I can confirm that i have sources as well as Big Red and others as to what is going on at the factory and they are true, but i can't disclose anyone's name.
