Engine Trouble

I have a 1999 234 persuader with a 454 EFI. I can run the engine as hard as I want or slow as I want, I just can not run it for more than 1 or 2 minutes straight between 2400 and 2800 rpm's. If I do, the engine bogs like it is starving for gas. The engine never stalls, it just drops bogs all the way down to idle and will not correct itself until I let off the gas and then go again. I don't get it, I can run full throttle all day long, I just can not run between 2400 rpm and 2800 rpm for more than 1 to 2 minutes straight. WTF!! Any thoughts???

Could be a bunch of stuff but is the engine going into protection mode? On some of those years, a faulty oil sending unit can send the ECU into Protection Mode. Also any bad electrical grounds can also cause you grief in the EFI systems as the ECU and its sensors must have the correct voltage to base its calculations upon.

If the engine went into protection mode would it leave an error code?

I am fearful it is sometype of grounding issue and the ECU is reacting to it.

Shouldn't I be getting some type of error code?

Check and clean all ground connections. Do a voltage drop test to confirm condition of both battery cables to motor and its components.

I finally fixed my problem. It took 6 weeks. By swapping parts and testing I ruled out the gas tank, throttle position sensor, rotor cap, plugs and wires. I was working with a mechanic and Merc tech support and finally decided to replace the ignition module and the computer. That's what did it. Now, hopefully I can enjoy the rest of the summer.
