F&PB mag Pulsare 1600 short article....

This month's Family and Performance Boating mag has an addition to the Checkmate Pulsare 1600BR build-up. They've purchased a Salt Water series new style 115 horse Optimax motor. Will be interesting to see how the new 1.5 liter 115 horse Opti-Max motor stacks up against the old tried and true 4 cylinder 115 2-stroke...

Checkmates owned: 1995 Pulsare 2100BR/1995 Mercury Promax 225 2.5 EFI. 1995 Persuader 183/4.3 LX V6. 1992 Pulse 171/1992 Mercury XR6 150 hp 2.5 liter.

They mentioned that, but since it's the magazine prepping the boat they have to stick with the 125 hp rating of the boat. Can you imagine what some jury would do if a person got hurt because it was overpowered and they said they got idea from the magazine article? Can you say "Chum in the water"?

When I read about the new lower horse Opti's being a small design (1.5 liters!) I was worried that they would be worthless motors. I'm very glad that F&PB chose this motor to run, since I'm very familiar with the performance characteristics of an older 16' Checkmate with a 115 tower of power six cylinder. When they get this thing on the water, it will be VERY interesting to see top speed numbers..........

Got this month's issue of F&PB, and they get the motor mounted up and started on the hose! Next issue, ON THE WATER!! :thumb:

Keep us informed if you hear or read anything more about this combination,I for one would be interested in hanging one of these on the back of my 85 Predicctor if I don't get the 115hp inline 6 running before to long.I am not having to much luck so far so it may be time for a new engine.Do you know if these motors are 4 stroke or 2?I reaad a little on Merc's web site but wasn't sure what it was.

I think there are some rumours out there, that Merc is experimenting with an inline 5 cylinder O/B. Just a guess but it may be based on the new GM truck motor, someone else posted that guess elsewhere, and I thought the same thing.

I've seen the same rumours at Scream and a couple of other boating boards.
Time will tell if they're true.

MrWick, the 115 is an Optimax direct injected two stroke. It's basically one half of a 3.0 V6 Optimax. Will be very interesting to see how it runs!

Does the OPTIMAX appear to be a good motor as far as you know?I assume even though the inline 3 is half of the v6 it should be as reliable as the v6,of course I don't know how a regular OPTIMAX runs......Thanks.....

Well...Nobody knows. Mercury should have it all sorted out, but it IS a new motor, so there's a risk. I like to wait a couple years before I buy new technology.

I was just reading over at Scream that someone "in the know" is now poo-pooing the five cylinder rumour.

Too bad, that sounded like a cool concept.

What does F&PB stand for and is it sold at most stores that carry magazines?Just a guess Family & Power Boaters....
