go procharger or not

Ok, I don't think the pro charger is going to clear on a 251 without major mods, it's close....several have run the 177's, including me...some mods required but not terrible. Also for about what you are going to spend for the procharger/intercooler setup, consider my all new 482 with all the good stuff, eagle crank and rods, kb blower pistons, comp blower cam, 177, milodon offshore pan, $7500 or best offer....Rob

That would look sweet in my 251, ez, but I don't think it
will fit, will it? What HP do you expect out of that beauty?
Also, it seems with too much more hp I'll then need an
outdrive upgrade as well..

I started off looking for a reasonable and relatively inexpensive
hp boost to gain 5 to 7 mph, I was willing to spend a couple grand
but don't really want to modify the fiberglass etc to make it work
to do it right. Seems now the effort might be a can of worms
and money pig. Perhaps I'll just enjoy my freshly rebuilt 454mag
and the 65 mph I get out of it..and that aint bad!

Just enjoy what I have is the advice of my closest friends and
it seems to make the most sense right now with all things
considered...but some of the moves I make defy logic, if it
feels right at the time..I just might...and likely will..lol..
I can't help it sometimes:D :shakehead: :eyecrazy::banana:!!

If you're just looking for 5-7 mph gain, then a supercharger is not for you! If you want 5-7 mph, then I would recommend a set of 5000.00 headers and aluminum heads and a nice intake and a nice carb. then top it off with a Marine MSD...all that will cost you around 6-7000.00 dollars and you'll gain about 100 horsepower and 5-7 mph. ...............or you can spend 2 grand and be out of a bout for 2 weeks and gain 12 mph....it's up to you. and it was up to me... I should be quite now, because I love pulling up to the beach and being the only boat with a supercharger!!! sorry guys...I've been drinking...

You're right Dogschool..the resonable and responsible thing to do is to leave it alone and enjoy it as it is. That's what my dad and my grandpa would do!...

I hear ya, bigs, as I stated earlier in this thread, I like your
advice the best and very well could end up going that route.
I think I gota have it (speed)- mid 70's in my 251 would rock!!
Standing pat seems so...boring...and for now I'll keep my
options open!;) ( I will do my homework on this one)

I built 2 of these engines, idenical, the 1st was in my 251 and ran a tad over 80, which was to fast, as I have 2 sons with no fear that drive the boat, so pulled and sold the first, this is the twin, with the 4-5 psi pulley 535hp@5400 with the 6-7 pulley(have both) 610@5400, and yes will bolt right in, you will need to mod the glass behind the seat, but is not noticable with the seat back in...about 10 min and a sabre saw...Rob

Once you get bitten by the need for speed, you don't go back to being happy with what you are running. There is always something that can be done to get more and knowing that keeps a person continuously tinkering and tweaking. Everything I have ever owned with a motor I have gone through this process, but then again, I am just a horsepower junkie:devil:.

The best thing I could tell you if you were going to mod your motor......pull it at the end of the season so you have all winter to work on it. I thought I got an early start on mine but right now is when everybody is doing stuff so parts get back ordered, machine shops get backed up, and you get in a hurry and might overlook things trying to get it done so you can still use it:brickwall:. But if you are just going to bolt a blower on top and not change any internals, then you probably still have enough time!:thumb:

Your bravo will handle it. Biggest things that eat drives is jump'n out of the water and letting it spin upon re-entry. I don't get crazy like that....too often. And I also avoid full throttle take offs. Once up on plan I hammer it, just to be on the safe side. Use Merury Hi-Perf lube helps alot also.

You can get hardened gears and upgraded shafts, but the best thing to do is like Bigsbetter said......no full throttle take offs and then hammer down after the boat is on plane. I was curious about a full bravo upgrade and found that is really expensive. You probably won't win any races out of the hole that way but remember your in a Mate.....it will be that much more fun when you blow by em aired out on the high end.

A friend of mine has a 33 Envision with twin blower motors at 800+ HP and 750+ TQ each (those were old dyno numbers....added a new s/c pulley since then). He has been running the same bravos for a long time but he eases her out of the hole. If he throttles them up too quick, you can actually feel them starting to grind. That is a wierd feeling.

Just don't get drunk and hammer down......that is hard not to do in that state of mind though!

just built a 489 stroker motor with pro charger for my 95 283 convincor and I love it. Turning a 30 pitch prop at 5400 right now and with a little tuning I expect to go to a bigger prop. I still have throttle left. 825hp and runs really good. Idles nice and everything. I am impressed by this little Huffer.

go for it the more power and the louder the better and a pete jackson gear drive whining sounds really cool too!

Boost is cool! We just Whipples a 19' Convincor with a 383Mag Mpi for a customer.. The boat is nutz!~.. Im sure you will enjoy your new speed & power.. :) Jamie / Lakeside

Hey Jamie, should you really be on the computer when you have all that work to do at the shop?? :shakehead: That 19' Convincor is the poop BTW, I can't imagine what chore that is to go full tilt in that puppy! :bigthumb:

Dunno, the great Chevy race engine builder Andy Jensen, built a strong 540ci for my 69 Camaro street car and talked me out of a pro-charger or any forced induction for anything short of a part-time racer. I couldn't be happier with 540ci N/A 740 hp on pump fuel. If and when i come up with the scratch for a new motor for the Persuader, I'll have a 502 or 540 done in the same manner as my Camaro......

Im guessing its Rolf.. after seeing the work I am doing at the shop last week.. lol .. I have to catch a break to relax here & there so I can check my email etc.. . Even if it's only for a couple minutes here & there.. lol :)

Anyway,Nice clip, your neighbors must love that!.. lol That car is cool!

The boosted engines if done properly can do well & have a good life.. The key is being precise and taking proper steps in the upgrade. If you get greedy for power and or dont install it properly you do start potentially asking for problems... I have nothing against big hp non boosted engines. We have done that as well. Just sometimes a blower makes good sense, like when an engine is new or newer & you are only going to add lower boost #'s to get a bit more out of the engine and tune it along the way. Again everything in moderation of course. The engines running more, or big boost have more done. Inside & out, but again doing it properly and precisely is key. The down side is it all costs time & money, but aside from that it can be done.. :) Heck look at Porsche, Audi, Vw, Toyota, Mercedes, and even some of the wmerican auto manufactrurers running turbos or superchargers. They are doing it and getting good life out of them. Granted a boat usually runs higher rpm for longer periods of time than a street car or truc does, so life expectancy wont be all apples to apples. It can be reliable & It can be good that is my main point.. :)
Eitherway, big power from NA engines or boosted engines is cool.. :) Jamie / Lakeside

Yup, that's me Jamie. I agree about the boosting. The Camaro had a 427 with a mini-B&M blower before going 540. It was boosting maybe 4-5 psi which was nice. It just didn't fit right under a stock hood so it had to go. Truthfully, i'm not sure what I'll do if and when the Persuader's motor comes apart, but a blower is an option. Right now I'm just counting my pennies to pay for the outdrive work :o
