Got bad advice on cleaning river water stains

I was told to use a cleaner called bar keepers friend which worked great to remove the stains but i found out that it scuffed/dulled my finish. What can i do to repair the damage?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

i agree, needs to be buffed out.

also, if your talking about the yellow/brown staining that happens below waterline, try a bathroom cleaner called "the works" just spray it on and rinse it off....i then wash with soap and water. to prevent it you need to wax the thing like crazy to seal it from absorbing the stain again....it is never ending!!

i agree! the works toilet bowl cleaner is a deluted form of muratic acid... spay it on and let it set for 10-15 minutes. make sure you rinse it really good! then a good wax will HELP prevent it:thumb: the best prevention is to not leave it in the water!:p

What he said!!

BTW, if you use toilet bowl cleaner, it eats concrete :)

keith on here told me about hull on off cleaner, you can buy it at west marine. he uses it on his gelcoat and i used it on my painted hull, stuff is amazing, i went down on the chesapeake for a weak in the water and my boat was filthy, sprayed on off on the boat and it just wiped away. it has never dulled my finish or his.

My Pulsare 2100 would get that about everytime I went out. I used starbrite hull cleaner in a spray bottle for years on it. Spray it on and wipe off the stain. Simple as that! I then cleaned it with water most of time after that right away.

And for fun you can loosley ball up some small peices of aluminum foil.... Pour about an inch of works into an empty plastic soda bottle, drop the loose pea sized peices of aluminum in, shake bottle.... THROW IT.. Watch it expand and then BOOM>>>

we used to use this stuff called "slimy grimy" - it was a powder, just add warm water - worked great, much nicer to work with than acid.

Thanks to all for the replies!

Since i posted this i was told about a Hull cleaner that is available from Walmart and the stuff is truly amazing. I pour the contents into a spray bottle and then spray a mist on the hull and the yellow stain turns white instantaneously!! If you major build up of scum then you may need to wipe it down but mot of the time its spray on and spray off with water hose. It is also safe for the environment and doesn't stain the diamond plate on mytrailer like the bathroom cleaners will do.

If you try this cleaner you will never go back to the acid type cleaners!!!

I'll have to give it a try. I go thru as much hull cleaner as I do soap with the dirty water I ride in. The acid base works great but I would prefer to use something as good and not acid based. That acid takes your breath away and lets you know of any cuts on your hands!!. It also eats on my galvinized trailer. Not sure about the stuff you got but the acid also ruins a spray bottle, I go thru them too. You might want too put it back in the container and wash out the spray bottle.

try the 3M restorer/wax combo with a buffer..stuff great !! what was the name of the hull cleaner from walmart ?

The hull cleaner I used from WalMart was made by Attwood and it was definitely muriatic acid based. Smelled just like the other stuff I used and did a little damage to the galvanized trailer just like the other stuff did.
