HemiBee's Rare 28' Outboard Convincor

finally found a picture and a little info on another 2800 sx o/b. Just bought one last month, has twin 2.4 bridgeports with 26pt props and 26in gil brackets. I am having alot of trouble getting out of the hole and alot of cavatation. I read that you were having similar problems with yours. I was wondering if you have had any luck solving these problems and have any suggestions. Thanks, Devin

Devin,

Congrats on the new purchase and welcome to the board.

I've never had a problem with cavitation or getting out of the hole. I repowered this past summer with twin 2.5, 260's. Old motors were 2.4, 200's with Bob's nosecones. New motors have Sportmasters and I have a lot of chinewalking @ 75mph+. Going to try the old lowers as soon as the weather warms up.
Check the height of your motors and make sure the centerline of the prop shaft is at or below the pad. I've run mine from 1-1/2" below to 2" above without any cavitation problems. The 26's should be OK too. I run 26's and 28's w/o any problems.
make sure you tuck the motors in all the way when you gag it...

Keep us posted on your progress and how about pictures and some more details...

hey hemi bee hows it going? a friend of mine had an 89 253 convincor w/454 we installed a 502 that we did for it and it chim walked bad at 70ish we never did get it to stop.

Hey gmiller, It chinewalks bad with the sportmasters...Still need to try the old lowers. Just waiting for warm weather!!!

chris, the boat had factory tabs on it but i thought they were to short and i kept trying to get him to buy longer tabs but he was out of money.guess thats why he got rid of it.

The only way we could get Daren34's diplomat outboard to stop chinewalking was to raise it up to the moon. Had to put a hyd jack plate on it to get over 55mph (we had just upgraded to the then new 2.0l johnnyrude 140 loop charged engine.)After the jack plate it would turn 6300 rpm w/ a 22 raker and 6800 rpm w/ a 20 raker.

HemiBee, on the chine walking, here's a stupid question.
You ever heard of the "steering chop"?
It's what us O/B guys have learned to do to combat chine walk in some boats at speed.
It very's from boat to boat but basically goes like this.
When the boat starts to drop and roll left, correct with just a bit of right wheel. When it starts/trys to roll right, steer left. You have to be able to feel the boat in the seat of your pants to do it well.
My 24' Sonic twin O/B does it from time to time but if I "drive it" I can always stop/control the chine walking.
I learned this when I had a 21' Laser O/B that I could'nt get over 55/60 even though I knew it was a 80 MPH boat.
I took it to the dealer I got it from (he's on the water) and told him my probelm. He laughed at me, then we went for a ride w/o him saying a word.
He held his foot on the floor from one end of the lake to the other w/o letting off! Was the 1st time the boat ran 80 since I ownded it and this was in rush hour Sunday afternoon traffic!
Anyhow, I have had several fast O/B's since then that I had to drive the same way.
I think I told you before that the SportMasters are designed for surfacing applications such as tunnels but I can't see them causing your boat to chine walk. What I've seen is they're just 2-3 MPH's slower than the fish gear cases even though they are orgasmic to look at!!!
When a boat chine walks what it is usually doing is falling off the pad. Steering chop is combatting this to keep it up and on the pad.
I had a 17' HydroStream that would do this so bad you couldn't drive it. (they were notorious for this) It required steering chop but when I intially tried it I made it worse to the point that it tried to spit me over the side.
I dumped out my pasenger, put on my race vest, hooked up the kil tether and said "it's either me or the boat".
Ended up that I was way over correcting and agrivating it. I was dooing what my old boats liked and it was WAY TOO much for this paticular hull.
Once I figured this out, I had that boat to 101 GPS.
Try it and see how you do???

Hey Instigator, Yep, been there and done that. Thanks for asking. The boat used to have 2.4 260's with CLE's and ran stable @ 82-83 mph.

Somethings out of wack and it just needs to warm up (and stay warm) to start playing with the set-up again.

I'll keep you posted....

HemiBee, gmiller699, DONCONVINCER, and anyone else near the Bay,

Did you ever get together on the bay? I saw some talk back in 2004 about a get together, did you ever do it? I boat in the Northern Bay area and in Rehoboth and Ocean City bays> I was hoping ot get some of us east coast folks together before the end of the season on the Bay or over at the beach in MD or DE?.

I know there's a few of us from the MD, PA, NJ areas that could make a last minute trip, anyone interested?

Anyone think we could pull it off?

Dang, was doing a little purusing and noticed a bunch of pictures are gone. WASSUP?

Guess I'll have to check the links. Anyone else had this problem?

Hey Chris are your ready???

The 28 might be on the market this summer. Just put a contract in on 2002 Cigarette Top Gun w/575's. Waiting on surveys and all that stuff.

Post all inquiries and references here. If she goes it has to be to the right enthusiast.

Here's your chance Chris.

I never did post what I think was causing the chine walk..... I lunched one of the power heads and picked up a fresh one that a buddy had. Put it one and no more chine walk. I figure the one motor was weak and the other carried it??

Anyone experience this before? Nothing else changed and it was resolved with the fresh power head.

Chris, I'm gonna hold it for you!!!

I'd love to have your boat.

But it's too big for our lake.

And then there's the little issue of budget! :yell:

Somebody is definitely going to get a one of a kind Check though, that's one thing we know for sure. :thumb:
