Hoping to be awesome JL Audio sound system.

Boat is a 2011 ZT244

Clarion head unit

Speakers
8 6.5" JL Audio component speakers
2 8.8" JL Audio subwoofers
1 10" JL Audio subwoofer

Amp
2 JL Audio M700/5

I just started the install yesterday. I'll take some pics when's it done and also shed some light on where the crossovers are set and tuning of the amps. The cool thing about these amps is that I can adjust the gain and crossover to each channel individually. It also has high pass filter and low pass filter. My goal is a stupid loud crystal clear system. Planning to set the crossovers so that the 6.5's pull mid- high, 8.8's pull mid-low and the 10" deep low bass.

Thanks Chris, I'm like a kid on Christmas Day. I get something in my head and obsess over it until I have it exactly where I want it.

Budman, I can't afford to lose mph. Im a speed junkie. And spencer I'm saddened to say I can't make it this year. I'm low man on the list when it comes time to pick vacation. I got vacation over Memorial Day weekend and am planning a trip to put in bay with problem child (Jeff). Any one interested in joining us is more then welcome. We were looking forward to coming to the bash. Sucks it won't happen. You guys are a great group of people. I'll sure as hell try again next year. Any chance I could buy some shirts from u when u get them made. Still wear the ones from the glass house trip!

Took me a long time to get it adjusted right where I want it. It's stupid loud. Not only will people here my motor coming they will hear the stereo as well.

Yes, I don't doubt it that it took a long time to set it up to sound just right. I've done a bunch of that before and with the electronic crossovers it can be tricky to get just the right amount of crossover overlap between the low pass for the sub, band pass for the mid-bass, and the high pass for the coax's. Don't know if you left the built-in passive crossovers in place or went to the extra trouble of bi-amping the coax's, but if you bi-amped that's yet another crossover point to figure out. Regardless, you have yourself a lot of amps and speakers to coordinate and it's fantastic that you got it all set up to your liking. While it's time consuming to set up, the sound quality is worth it in the end. With it all being JL I'm sure it's crazy loud too.

Yes you sure sound like you've done this a few times. I have it set up where I want it for now but I'm not sure it's 100% right. I have all 3 subs set at 80 on low pass filter and I set my 6.5's at 120 on high pass filter. So there is a pretty big gap that I'm missing. Even with the 6.5's set at 120 they are still pumping bass. I felt that if I set them at 80 I was getting a touch of distortion when trying to achieve the volume I wanted.

Jl has always been top for me in my trucks. looks good in the boat. maybe paint the grills to put some color in there.

You'll needs some subs in the back of that escalade to fit in with the boys down there for black bike week.

Thats my favorite weekend. The work on the bikes is just crazy. An honestly for the most part its the best party weekend. truck stays parked its too hard to get around, but my golf cart is pimped and hangs right with them lol

Yes, a few times indeed. I know it might seem that you have a frequency gap between the subs and mids but where you have them should be about perfect and is roughly where I have mine in my car. Its the frequencies between 80 and 120 Hz that make bass sound muddy and if you don't put a gap between the crossover points between the 8s and 6.5s it doubles up the sound level of those muddy area frequencies. The crossovers don't totally cut off the sound level of frequencies above 80 or below 120 - the sound level rolls off, typically at a rate of 12 decibels per octave or 24 decibels per octave. So by having a 40Hz gap in your crossover settings you're still getting sounds between 80 and 120 Hz but now at 100Hz your 8s are contributing maybe 50% of the sound level and the 6.5s are contributing the other 50% sound level. If you set both the low pass and high pass to 100Hz then the 8s and 6.5s are both playing 100Hz and doubling up the sound level at 100Hz making it sound lousy.

All this talk is making me more motivated in putting four of those JL M880s (8.8" coax) in my boat with one of my leftover 4-channel high current amps. I just have the stock Clarion 6.5s powered from the head unit and they're pointless unless you're sitting still. Not sure where I can put a sub in my boat so I might just try swapping the 6.5s for the 8.8s, throw in the amp, and see what it sounds like. And then if I can find a place for a sub I'm thinking of a dual voice coil so I can wire it to my 4-channel amp so I have two mixed mono pairs.

Did we just become best friends?

Got a deal on 4 more 6.5's ... Ya I might be nuts! I will need to bridge the amps to get more power for the added speakers. Amps are currently running 4x75 watts. Bridging them will give me 2x200watts. Should be pushing 66watts per speaker. I'm planning on mounting a pair above the grab handle in the back seat. The other pair will most likely go up the back seat with the subs. The plan is that I won't need to turn it up as loud and have better sound quality. Current settings are high pass filter of 200Hz on the 6.5's and running low pass filter of 80Hz on all 3 subwoofers. Clarion head unit with bass plus 2 and treble plus 3. I will get some pics and feedback once the 4 new speakers are installed

Just a crazy thought here - but I think you have too much cone area in the 6.5's, and not enough on the low end. A typical car loud system would have 4 6.5" speakers, and 2 10's or 12's, and has a natural bass boost due to being an enclosed car. You have twice (or is it now 3 times, couldn't tell if you have 8 or 12 coaxials) as many mid's and rather small subs. For the number of mid speakers you have I would think 3 or 4 12's would be in order. At a bare minimum, ditch the 8.8's and replace them with 10's.
