HPDI YAMAHA

Thanks for the nice comment Rowdy. But watch it with those old "Fast Strikes". They're great motors. I'd have a 150/175 on anything I'd own. However, the 200/225's of that mid 90's era left something to be desired in the way of reliability LOL!
Really no reliability issues with the E-tec's. Had a few issues to work out in the 3 cyl. and 60 degree V-6's in reguards to rough running at the transition stage from stratisfied to homogeneous combustion, but all that has been taken care of. The "Big Block" V-6's have had a few map updates, but nothing major. They've been pretty bulletproof from day one.
Groucho, I guess if more builders were doing performance boats like Checkmate still does, maybe we'd see more E-tec's on those kind of boats. A guy thinking "performance boat" is usually going to have Merc stuck in his head, that is true. But if that same guy would just give the E-tec a chance, he might find that he'd end up "bleeding blue" just like me. :)

I was just looking at the TUFF power boats website and they tested the Merc 300, Yamaha 300, and Etec 225HO on there 21fter which is very simular to the Starflite.

Speed #'s are as posted below: (notice simular speeds of the Yam and the Rude' despit the difference in decal numbers)

Mercury 300 102 mph
Etec 225 HO 87 mph
Yamaha 300 92 mph

Nice stats Rowdy. See what I mean? What version of the Merc was tested? I'm guessing it was an older Pro Max with those kind of numbers....very impressive. Just think of how much the 250H.O. would close that gap on the Yami?! Giddy-up!! I bet they didn't say much about hole shot though did they? That's where the E-tec will really shine.
We did an "on water" promo for the E-tec in 05 and I was giving rides in a 21' tournament bass boat. To show off the torque, I would run the engine up to "full running trim", pound the hot foot to the floor and let the boat stand on the tail. Within 10 seconds the boat would fall onto plane. Oh....I forgot to mention that this was done with over a 1/2 tank of fuel, livewells full, and 3 adult men in the seats. I've never seen another engine do that on a boat that wasn't just grossly overpowered. Everyone was impressed to say the least. After it planed, I'd go ahead and run it up on the top end just to show them that setup wasn't propped down for a strong holeshot.

Not to take anything away from the E-Tec but those stats posted above Remeber the 225HO is more like 250Hp and the 300 Yammi is barely 280-285 That is why they are so close. There is no way 75Hp only netted 5 Mph.

That is why I said "decal numbers" and not horse power diff.

Wide Open, they used a 300xs for the testing.

It was a 300X not xs. And i know that you wrote decal numbers i was they are alot closer in hp than some would think

All in all, anybody can brag up whatever they'd like. That's what's so nice about where we all live....here in the good ole USA. We can all play "My boat's faster than your boat", but when they go in the water, that's what tells the truth. Giddy up!!

J

That same boat as listed above ran 2.5 mph slower than the E-Tec with a 250 4smoke on it also with a very inefficient lower on it.

Hey "WIDE OPEN" is the E-TEC 300 gonna be the same as a 250 HO, (around 275hp) or is it gonna be 300hp or better? Basically, will it end up like a 250 & 300 hpdi--around the same actual hp, just with different stickers.

From what I read, hopefully WideOpen will correct me if I'm wrong. But the 300 Etec will not be avil. with a 20in shaft. And also the 300hp lower will not be as good for "speed" as the one you can get for the 250ho.
