I'm a newbie! What did I get myself into?

So I was wandering aimlessly through lower Michigan this week and ran upon an 1983 21' Entertainer with a 200hp Black Max. Newer powerhead and lower unit, decent interior, and buffable gelcoat. The smile on my face as I passed the 50mph mark told the salesman he had sold it. (My last boat was a 16 foot Bayliner, after all.)

1. I'm looking for suggestions on a decent stainless prop. The current 19p aluminum ain't gonna cut the mustard.

2. Where does a guy find an original or acceptable aftermarket windshield for one of these things?

3. Eventually I'll be pulling wakeboarders and kneeboarders..... Should I look into a hydrofoil like a Doel-Fin or Stingray, or is this a waste of money and top end?
 
:welcome: and have you got the boat into the water yet? If not you'll want to get some numbers so you no what kinda prop you can use and if you will even need a hydro?
 
Welcome to the board and congrats on the new boat.
We are going to need some numbers, makes it easer to suggest a prop.
WOT rpm and speed will help a great deal.
 
Had it in the water for the sea trial, but I wasn't gonna beat on a boat that didn't belong to me..... All bets are off now!
The previous owner dropped a 22p stainless and a 4 blade 18p aluminum off at the marina today FOR FREE...... Needless to say I went straight to the marina already and picked them up. I'm going to go try all 3 out tomorrow and get some numbers.

I did notice that the 19p ventilates/slips if I really get into the throttle out of the hole. Is this normal? I've never had a boat with this kind of power before, and I almost thought the prop might be slipping at the hub.
 
To answer your questions about what you got yourself in to...its obvious a B.O.A.T. better yet spelled out it stands for Bring Out Another Thousand.

What's my redline??????

Well, I managed to max out the tach and speedo today. They only go to 6k and 60mph. So my question is..... What's the highest revs I should be pushing this motor. The last thing I need is catastrophic engine failure.

The numbers, near as I can figure....
65 mph @ 6300 or 6400 rpm with the 22p s/s prop
58 mph @ 6000 rpm with the 18p aluminum 4 blade.
Those were the readings on the guages

What you got into

The numbers sound pretty good. If it's a stock 200 you don't need to spend a lot of time above 6000 rpm. Seems like the motor was rated at 5800. If it spins the 22 to 63-6400 the engine must be in pretty good shape. 65 mph is certainly possible and you might even try a 24 if you can find one to try. How did it get up with the 22? The motor runs strong.... I saw the invoice for the new powerhead two seasons ago and another for the rebuilt lower from last season.... The boat was maintained by the brokering dealer. The take off with the 22 is fantastic I can actually hammer down out of the hole and jump right up on plane without any slip. It seems to slip and ventilate with both the 19p 3 blade and the 18p 4 blade..... the 4 blade slips less, though.

As for the gauges....Yeah, definately time.... I've tried unplugging the speedo hose and even tried to vacuum the line out...... it's still stuck on 30mph.

So who makes a 24 pitch stainless for a decent price?
 
I have a 300 convincor with a 496 HO with a 23 pitch 3 blade and a 22 pitch 4 blade. Are these the correct props.

It's a Mazco HP4

Over and thru hub stainless 4 blade, 24 pitch.... I was just worried about the fitment, but I keep hearing that the V6 Gear cases were all 15 spline from 78 to 99.......
I guess I'll have to wait and see. I bought it (used). Just waiting for a UPS truck, now.
 
new to site but the way it looks in the vid is that you wrapped the speedo I would suggest to replace the speedo with one that would handle the higher speeds. I know that in my 1987 eluder it reads 80 mph on the speedo. I would try that and then you can see how fast she really is
 
Can't trust the boat speedos anyway, do yourself a favor and buy a hand held GPS. GPS is the only accurate way to judge speed on the water.

My old Pulsare would bury the speedo at 85 mph, but on GPS it was really going 74.
 
Check ebay for a good used prop, I had a 26p chopper on an old 18' avenger with a 175 merc and it would fly. Finding used props for a merc is easy. good luck :thumb:
