lower unit blues

hello all, my 1979 115 inline 6 mercury has begun to grind when i try to put it in reverse. it will not go all the way in reverse in idle, if i push the lever down further in slips in most of the time, but this is scary because it does it with quite a bit of throtte too. forward drive shifts just fine. Anybody know what my problem is? Could it just be a linkage adjustment? i haven't done anything with the linkage and the reverse used to go in? OR, am i pretty much limited to rebuilding the lower unit with new gears, i know i can get a complete gear set for around 350-375.00 but i have never torn a lower unit apart. is this a job a guy with a decent amount of mechanical know how could do? or am i better off sending the unit off to get rebuilt?

Thanks alot!
Alex

I would check cables first it sound like you have a shift cable tat is due for replacement.....try disconecting it then movin the cable then the lower unit at the motor....as far as that goes you shoud be able to see if it's shifting in all the way or not with the cowl off

Lost Reverse

1979, the lower on my 200 did the exact same thing and I thought it was toast. Upon tear down I was pleasantly surprised to find that the problem was the $ 5.50 shift cam. Even the shift dogs were OK and probably only worn because I had been forcing it into gear. While I had the carrier and shaft out I replaced the aft prop-shaft bearing, prop-shaft seals (2), and the carrier O-ring. I spent less than $ 100.00 and when done it shifted like new. You will need to determine whether you have a Cam-Shift 1, Cam-Shift 2, or and Easy-Shift lower. They are similar but different, study the manual. It ain't Rocket Science.

I would look at the cable first. look at most of the threads on here about poor shifting. 75% of them turn out to be the cables. :bigthumb:

been there done that:poke: check the cables first!!!!! i paid a guy to tear my lower apart and come to find out it was a 60$ shift cable:eyecrazy:
do some research before you jump the gun like i did:thumb:
