Manhattan trip - early-mid September?

I haven't been out around NYC yet this year, but am planning on doing it in early-mid September. My FIL will be visiting from Europe for a few weeks from end of August to end of September (my MIL passed away a few weeks ago) and I've promised him several boat trips while he's here as he's never been out on the boat since I bought it. The Manhattan trip should be the highlight for him.
He worked in the Royal Air Force all his life, and his hobby was wreck diving (many expeditions for the Queen), so he loves to be out on the water but hasn't been out in many years since retiring - certainly not in a Checkmate!

I'm putting it out there for any other boaters that fancy doing the spin with us on a date that suits everyone.

So first things first - rather than locking in an exact date now, who would be interested in towing to Liberty State Park to launch for a day in the first half of September?

We don't need huge numbers, but as always the more the merrier!

My thought on an itinerary at this stage would be:
-Launch at Liberty State Park
-Stop in front of Lady Liberty for a few pictures as usual
-Head up to the Hudson past Ellis Island, Jersey City (there's a marina here to top off fuel if anyone needs)
-Pass USS Intreipd, under the GW bridge, through the Palisades, under the Tappan Zee bridge
-Stop at Ossining (NY side) for lunch in a marina there, top off fuel.
-Back down the Hudson, into the Harlem river
-Motor around to Hells Gate and down the East River
-Back out into NY harbor past South Street Seaport
-Back to base after a last salute to Lady Liberty

I think from the last time I checked, it's about 75 miles roundtrip. Probably about 3-4hrs will easily do it.
An awesome day with some of the best views you'll ever see on a boat!

So who's in?

That sounds like an amazing ride. Get lots of pics and let me know if you have two spare seats on future trips.

I'm in. Will also have spare seats for any motorists who want to join.
BTW- If FIL wants to dive west atlantic can hook him up and dive -buddy as well.

If you guys do this Saturday September 6th I think my brother and I will try to head up and join in the run! It would be in his Formula so you would have to make sure to leave us out of the pics but would still love to make the trip once!!

Excellent! A Formula as the camera boat!!! AWESOME!

I'll be checking out the options for dates later with SWMBO so we can lock this in soon.

The original Lady Libertys' Liners picture was taken by "2 non-boater looking types" in a CC after Sim handed a camera to them in a choppy NY harbor. I consider ourselves masters of this photo by now from that experience alone!

Don't worry - we'll manage!

Getting the synchronized fly by is still something that Sim will have to plan. :D

OK - back with dates. Thinking of a Saturday for the trip so that anyone towing in from a distance would have the Sunday to head home.
Maybe even consider another boat trip on the Sunday if it might work (Delaware river to Philly or one of the NJ lakes).

Plan A - Saturday September 6th for Manhattan trip

Plan B - Saturday September 13th for Manhattan trip

Depending on those interested, and the weather forecastr in the run up to the weekend(s), we could move this Manhattan trip to a Sunday if it would work better.

If you go Saturday the 6th i think we will come up and join! Little nervous trailering up and boating in a big city. Never been to New York!! But Casey says he is up to it so we will plan on it!! I fly back home on the 7th so that would be the only possible date for me.

Looking at the map is the ramp at Liberty State park the one to the south down by Liberty golf course? If so how bad will parking be there? Doesnt look like there is much trailer parking looking on google maps.

Don't worry about boating in a big city! You'll be going all around it!! :D

You won't be driving in any city limits, and there is parking for about 15-20 car&trailers at the ramp and another larger car park a few hundred feet up the road near the visitors center if we're stuck.
As long as you are happy with your boats reliability, know your range on a full tank and have all the equipment in case of a random Coastguard inspection on the water, you will be fine.

Plan should be to meet at the ramp by 10am so we get our parking and enough time to launch and stick together. Plenty of space to float near the ramp as other launch because only usually enough room for 2 boats at the jetty (but 2 side by side ramps).
Depending on where you stay each night, you should find it easy to park the rig in a safe place. Let me know if you need some help with that - probably good to discuss by phone. I live 30mins due west of Newark airport off Rt78. PM me for my cell. I might be able to put a boat on my drive or grass overnight if you didn't want to have it in a hotel car park.

Thanks!! Casey only lives about 2.5 hours south so we will probably drive up Saturday morning meet up hang out make the run with everyone and at the end of the day head back to his place. As for the rest he boats the bay as his home waters so he should have all of the coast guard stuff ready to go! Ill PM you my number and we will keep in touch!!

I remember part of my last trip to Manhattan. Just glad my pants werent down around my ankles when I woke up. Sorry. Can't help you much.
