Merc. Stalling Problem

81Diplomat

New member
81 Mercury inline 6 115 is stalling when shifting into gear.

I've had the Diplomat out a couple times this week. It ran great the first day, and all but the end of the second day. It is a bit cold natured when you first fire it up, but ran fine after a couple minutes.

The problem; I had ran the boat for a couple hours before we hit the sandbar for some swimming. Some nasty clouds came in so we decided to head to the dock. Started fine, backed out with no problems. I would shift her forward, she stood up then rpms would drop and she would stall. I could start her back and idle, but as soon as I tried to get on plane it would happen again. We idled back toward the loading ramp, trying a few times with same result. Then we got within eye site of the load out, when she took right off and planed out for a few hundred feet before I had to shut her down to idle into loading area.

Anybody have any idea's what could cause this? I was thinking about replacing the fuel lines/bulb. Had it looked at by mechanic a couple months ago. He said carbs were fine then. Thanks

Thanks guys, I will work through the suggestions in that thread and also take a fuel sample to see how it looks. Time to order some fuel line.

A quick look at the fuel line and sure enough it's the old line that doesn't like the new fuel.:brickwall: Made a trip to the dealer and got some new line and bulb as suggested the the thread posted above. I will get that put on sometime this week, then it looks like I need to check the fuel pump. Thanks for the info.:bigthumb:

Changed the fuel line today. Now I want to tackle clean the fuel pump. Can anybody share a link for a video for how to remove and clean up the fuel pump? I have a seloc manual, but it's a bit vague on the removal process. I'm fairly mechanical, but I like to be well prepared before starting this type of project.

So, I decided to remove the Fuel Pump. Do you think I should go ahead and rebuild the fuel pump while I have it out? Can someone link the correct rebuild kit for me, please? The places I look are a bit confusing. My selco manual says that the inline 6 gasket is a little different than the v6. I want to do this right the first time.

Rebuild Kit is on the way. That guys video was very helpful, Thanks.

I called Mercury directly to make sure that I would get the correct rebuild kit, wow, were they helpful. The tech spent about 35 - 40 minutes on the phone with me and looking through his info. to not only find the right kit, but to verify with 2 other sources. Hats off to that guy.
