Mercruiser 470?

SCT

Well-known member
Anyone owned a Mercruiser 470? Good? Bad? Are they 180 hp? Where did the "470" designation come from? I've been reading up but hear conflicting reports. I read where the motor is half of a 460 Ford block.

Thanks-

They had a motor that was 1/2 of a Ford 460, as long as you're talking about the inline 4 cylinder. Mercruiser also offered an inline 6, don't remember what that designation is?

I believe its the strongest 4cyl marine motor that was produced, its a very good motor.I always thought it be fun to port the head, mill it a bit, gasket match everything and a nice cam.It be a fun project.

ran great until they broke..which most did..POS in my opinion..lots of overheating issues, head gasket leaks, and the charging system...now that was a jewel !!! they used a 460 ford head, pistons and rods, merc only alum block and their crank...years ago the blocks were over 6k bare from merc...sure can't even get one today..I would avoid like the plaque...

I have one in my Diplomat. It's a mercruiser aluminum block with a ford 460 head on it. I'm currently rebuilding mine, it had a bad rear seal so I decided to go through it.
The 2 bbl has 170 hp and the 4 bbl is running 188 hp I believe. It does great on gas and has a lot of torque for pulling tubes. There are a few issues but if you address those before they become a problem you are set to go. Mine has been problem free since I bought it in 94.
The main problem now are some parts are hard to find or no longer exist.
If you want to read up on them here is a great site.
