Mercury rules!

Once you go BLACK.......

Ive not owned any of the BRP Johnnyrude products, but back when they were owned by OMC we had a few. That experience soured us so bad we vowed to never buy another Rude, also had plenty of bass boat friends with those dreaded Ficht abortions and steered clear. Not to say Opti-pops didn't have issues, but those were usually only caused by poor driving skills in regards to throttling leading to over-revving. Had merc's ever since with no more issues other than routine maintenance. I know BRP usually makes one heck of a product and has since redesigned nearly everything, but alas, once you go black, you don't go back.

I don't think I would ever buy one, FIL has had two now and I'm not impressed, the old 90 he had dropped to coils, the fuel pump, and the lower unit grenaded, all within the first two years.

This 150 is just shy of a year old and I'm pretty sure the oil pump quit and fried the power head, it's at the dealer now waiting to find out, good thing it's got 5 years warranty because you sure need it.

I just had my first issue with my old 87 Mercury on friday in the 4 years I've had it, One spark plug went...lol

My Dad was on the boat with them yesterday and was poking a little fun at him that his 2012 was getting towed in by a old 1987 Merc.

It seems they just don't make stuff like they use to, I owned a few OMC motors and they were pretty good, the 96' 3.0 225 Johnson Venom I had was one of the best outboards I've had.

I like how they advertise no service needed on the e-tec until 300 hours, they forgot to mention that you need to replace everything else before then. :rof:

Sorry the Etecs are not doing their job for the FIL. Every make has its lemons.

My 250 Etec ran flawlessly until I sold it with the Starliner. It had only 130 hours on it though. The new owner has been running it very hard and not a hiccup. I once took it on a 90 mile cruise into a very un-populated part of our lake. I was confident it would make it back and never worried about it dying out there. My 200 Merc EFI was the worst motor I ever had. I replaced what felt like every part on it. When I finally got it running perfect, I sold it... and would never own another.

Want reliable? Buy a carbed motor! I agree, the new motors are way too complicated.

My old EFI merc has been funny, first year they had EFI and its worked great, charging system is lacking on it that's my only complaint, both the etecs ran flawlessly for the first 100 hours, the 150 has 103 on it and the 90 had around 225 when he sold it.

Everything nowadays has too much electronics, I know both my semi's have had way too many problems because everything is electronic, my 2014 freightliner just had a problem that it wouldn't shut off because the transmission wouldn't talk to the computer and tell it that it was in neutral, had to disconnect the battery to get it to shut off.

My only worry of not making it home with my carbed JohnnyRude was one of running out of fuel. My EFI Merc isn't any better though.

My friends 225 HO ETEC an 08 I believe, 2 lower units, 1 fuel injector, My 07 250 ProXs, 1 lower unit, 3 injectors and 6 coils (factory recall). Both motors run excellent, the ETEC is amazingly quiet, they appear to be the same on fuel usage and performance although the additional ponies of the 250 ProXs make it a little faster so my conclusion is this. The simplest and best motors to run with no warranly are the older 2.4 and 2.5 carbed Mercs, there are lots of parts and mods available. They can make a lot of HP, and they are very easy to work on. The new stuff, is pretty much the same and you better get a warranty!! The next time I shop for an outboard, it will be the best deal and warranty regardless of brand.

2nd Etec and not a issue. 1st hit a submerged log and knocked out a gear in lower unit so sold it as was and upgraded to a HO 150HP and yes I towed a newer black motor in with the 1st one as well...
BRP made the Rude a player and nothing beats the whole 1 minute it takes to winterize the motor in the fall using the automated fogging cycle. Another Etec will be the next motor! A added plus it's built at BRP's new Wi facility using American labor!

Glad your having good luck with them, how often do you use them? Ours is on the water all weekend every weekend, I've got some friends with them that haven't had any problems either but the only get used once or twice a month.

My neighbour right next door had his engine bracket break a few days ago on his 60 e-tec mounted on a pontoon, he never hit anything and all they do is cruise around at idle most of the time.

I've heard of some people having lots of issues with the newer mercs too, I would like to get a newer motor but more I think on it maybe its best to keep what I got, it runs every time and we use it a lot, at least 3 or 4 days a week, I see all these guys with new iron broke down so why bother upgrading.

Almost every weekend and used for playing towing or just cruising. IMO modern motors if not set up properly is most times the issue. You simply cannot ignore the new fuel system requirements, battery displacement, etc on the new FI engines as you could get away with on the carbs.
Personally I could never go back to a carb engine. Instant starts, smooth operation and smokeless operation is to good to be true in a grunty two stroke.
