Need Advice - Boat Seller screwing me over

if you do much long distance dealing, where you cannot get there with cash quickly you are going run into this a lot...had it happen to me couple of times a year...month and a half ago latest....small claims court ?? would get thrown right out..can you prove what he said ?? move on to the next...Rob

I agree....

Just so you know Anthony, I havent been incontact with him at all since we've talked.
I sent an email when the ad came out, finally got on back last week said "its still for sale, give me a call xxx-xxx-xxx, John"

I havent called knowing you were gonna try to buy the boat.

If I do go down that way to look at a another boat I will let you know, if he's still around I'll go look for you! Im not planning a trip just yet but maybe soon.

That does sound a little fishy but the only thing you can do is go down there when you can if its for sale. I understand the probs but hes sitting on a boat that he wants to sell to the first man with money in hand. But, he shouldnt have told you the lower price and then backed down later, he couldve called you saying "do you want it come and get it, otherwise i have another buyer!"
gives you both a way out.

good luck, keep us posted!

I forgot you had the Sequoia. I really wouldn't worry anything under 24'. As long as its on a good trailer with brakes it'll be fine, imo.

There is always the possibility he has no one else and he is
making up the story just to get you to pay more.

Got a call...

So the guy just calls me and appoligizes for a solid 10 minutes: "My girlfriend and Brother couldn't believe what I was doing, I feel horrible..." on and on...

It seemed pretty sincere to me - but he also seemed like a good guy last week when we talked. So I guess my perceptions don't really matter - it's business.

Then He says "so I know we agreed on $8800, but I have a ton of offers for $9500 from all over - are you cool if we split the difference? I honestly do have a guy coming today with $9500 in hand, but like we agreed, I'll put him off and hold it for you until the 27th like we agreed. Give me a call if you have any other questions - I promise to return your calls this time."

I said yeah, sure and he gives me his full name and address. I tell him I'll call him next sat to touch base and again on the 26th before I get in the car.

At this point, I'm in a holding pattern - If he follows through I'll probably get in the car at my own risk on the 26th. If I never get a call from the guy again, I'm not going to sweat it. A summer on a sweet starliner ain't exactly a hardship!!!!

Oh yeah - it also has a drive shower and a "torpedo" B1 lower - I guess that's like a nosecone??? It actually sucks that it's such a nice boat...

Thanks again for all of the replies - really calmed me down the past day!!

good to hear! it sounds like a good boat with great potential.
Good luck, cant wait to hear about it more!

seveeral hours, needaboat is in MI, boat for sale is in MO. I think he said 9hrs.

anyone down in the MO area that could help him out???

9 Hours thats all whats the problem then. Get in your truck stick your cash in your pocket, pack a sandwhich and drive down their and buy the boat. Why does it need to be put off till the 27th. I dont really blame the seller now. Sounds like he needs money and you are the last resort because you are dragging your rear getting their

If its a smokin deal you never waste tim you move fast

Well personally I'd just move on - but that's me. :thumb:

At this point, can you really trust this guy?

I guess if you still think it's a great deal, I'd be making pretty damn sure you go over the boat and the details of the sale with a fine-tooth comb, before you turn over your hard earned cash. That last thing you want to do is find some hidden defect after you buy it.

As some others have suggested, he might be making up all these other buyers.

If you still decide to proceed, I'd play his game.

Tell him that you figured the deal was dead so you went out looking elsewhere. And while looking, you found another similar boat that is closer to you and cheaper and that you've already seen it in person. Tell him it's at a dealer and comes with a warrantee and storage until spring and comes with water skis, a full tank of gas, free spring tune up and a couple of different props. One for sking and one for top end runs. Tell him the trailer has brand new custom chrome rims with new tires and that the bunks have just been redone and that it's got a new winch strap and polyurethane bow roller.

Once you're done listing off all the pros of the other boat you found, tell him that you would still be interested in making the original deal, mainly because you're a honest purchaser and you feel it's your obligation to honour your original agreement. ;)

Anthony You Win

Anthony, have you done any research on Stingray boats ?? Thats to much money for a 15 year old Stingray. They look nice but are not high-end boats. I have hands on experience because my son bought a Stingray 2 years ago. PM me if you want details of a sad story.

Yeah, I googled his number and found that stuff a while ago. There were some other posts on a foreign car site where he was looking for a hood for that subaru too. Not exactly confidence inspiring...

I know I should probably cut it off totally and move on, but I'm going to gather a bit more info. and be extremely cautious. I figure it's one of 2 things.
1) The guy is a junk dealer and looking to make a buck on this sort of unique boat he came across somehow.
2) He's legit and selling his toys/junk because he really is moving.

It's worth a call to the Missouri DOR to see if he really is the original owner and verify there are no leins on it. We talked a lot about the history of the boat and if he's owned it for a short time, he has spent over 2 hrs on the phone telling flat out lies. I do believe that his ad generated alot of inquires (two just from guys on this site), so I think at least that part is true.

Yesterday he offered to send some detailed pictures so I'll let him do that. He also gave me his full name, address - and that checks out (big deal...).

I've got enough time into this thing that if the boat is what he says it is, I'll kick myself for not checking into it totally. Just going to be very careful.

How many warning flags do you need to realize that this thing is likely a POS and it isn't going to turn out good?

Run man Run. It needs a shifter boot cable... ya and probably about $10k in repairs. It probably sat on the bottom of a lake.

Like any used mechanical beast you can have unseen issues from the best and most honest person, that is the risk of buying used. Why would you want to deal with a liar?

I have a deal on some unbelievable land in Florida close to nature, but I am moving and need money. I'll sell it to you cheap.

I've got a feeling I have a prime seat to watch atrain wreck unfold here.
