New Boat, need help

New member
So I am the proud new owner of a 1988 Predictor with a 150hp black max on it. The issue I am having is with chine walking pretty badly around 60mph. Boat seems to have a lot more speed left in it, but i cant stay in the throttle long enough. I also dont seem to be turning up enough RPM's, but I can't tell cause I havent been able to really trim the boat out and get a good number. If anybody has any wisdom to share on propping and engine height I would appreciate it. My goal is 70mph!! I'll post some pics of the new ride when I get a chance.

If you search for predictor on here or chine walk you will see lots of things that can help.
worn engine mounts , play in steering and engine height are at the top of the list.

were are you from someone might live near you that could help.
I have a 94 predictor with yamaha 115 2 stroke

Thanks! I went and ordered myself a CMC high-speed hydraulic jack plate with 5.5" of set back and a 5" stroke. Hopefully this will calm it down a little and let me see what the boat can do. I'm really thinking I can get 70mph!

Hi, adding a jack plate and finding the right height helped me out quite a bit. Making sure my dual cable steering was adjusted with zero play made a huge difference. Also the fun part, plenty of time learning how to fly your new checkmate!
Congrats on your purchase

Nice looking boat. Glad you got you handling dialed in. I have a predictor with the same set up, very fun to drive. Happy boating

Any advice on where I should line up the motor on the jack plate when I mount it tomorrow? And has anyone run dual batteries in these boats when adding a jack plate? I'm hungry for speed tips.

I haven't ever had a problem with electrical power with just one battery in my jackplate equipped Checkmates. Plus, I wouldn't think you would want to add any extra weight to the back of a Predictor with a V-6 on the back, mine barely floats as is.

I think I'm going to run the second battery, being that I'm adding a few other goodies, but I'm mounting them next to the bulkhead in the bow. Hopefully this might help settle it down a little bit.

Planning to put the boat back in the water next weekend. I took a dive down the rabbit hole when I pulled out the fuel tank to do the jack plate. I ended up redoing a lot of wiring and running the battery to the bow to help counter act some of the weight from the hydraulic jack plate I added. I still havent run the boat with the jack plate, but from what I can see on dry land I am going to have an issue with water pick up. Anybody installed a nose cone kit on a 150hp black max before? Also, any prop suggestions? My guess was a 23-24p Laser2, but I really want a 4 blade for hole shot.

Hi. Just a word of warning, weight further up will help with hole shot and low speed planing but can actually make high speed handling worse! If you're mount the battery up front maybe do it under the passenger side of the bow to counteract your weight in the driver seat?
Great looking boat! Let us know how your water tests go please!

I should add that at some point in the future I'm considering repowering my exciter with a heavier motor and I may also choose to relocate my battery, so I'm quite curious to see if you feel it's worth it. Happy boating!

I'll definetly posts findings, but I'm a little delayed right now. Ironing out some issues with the motor but should be in the water for the weekend.

Can's stop throwing parts at it. Steering cable broke on land from all the adjustment the jack plate has. Dual cable steering will be here Tuesday along with two "hot trim" controls for the jack plate and engine tilt.

Any more progress ? Wanting to see how it runs with Jackplate . You can search on my post to see what I have done so far to my 94. Getting ready to do motor mounts next. Mine are now shot and it's chine walking again . Then a Jackplate for spring.
Post some pics of your new setup.
And keep up the good work

Progress has been made. Just seems like everytime I try to remedy an issue I create another small project. Planning on throwing the boat in the water this weekend just to take it for a test ride then back in the shop to button things up. I'll post pics of what I've done and how she runs. Little off topic, but what do you guys use to post pics on here? Last host site I used was time consuming and I'd like to share a lot of photos with you guys.

Latest issue has been with the dual steering cables and where they come out in the transom well. Going to need to drill holes and get them in line with the steering tubes.
