1971 mx-14 with a merc 90 from 1980. The side mount controls are really worn out and crappy. What modern setup could i go with? no room for a foot throttle, plus i mainly just cruise and tube with the boat.Anybody upgrade anything similar?

Welcome to the forum!! I moved your thread over to props, setups and rigging. :DSomeone will be along shortly to answer your question!

Can someone help James? He's looking for new/modern controls to fit a merc tower of power.

I got a new style control for my Eluder on eBay. One thing to worry about with a smaller boat may be you have to stick with a side mount control so there is enough room for the handle to go forward. I've thought about replacing the side mount control on my Predictor, but I'm pretty sure I would run into this problem.

You'd have to make up something at the motor to make it work as the old TOP has an external plug and the newer stuff has an internal plug(jury rig the original plug onto the new harness).Shouldn't be a big deal.

I am going to be doing the same change as well.
73 MX-15, Vintage Merc controller to Merc 1978 115hp.
Can you not get universal cables now with any end fittings you want?
If so you should be able to get any newer control to work and also if the handle is to close to the side you could make up a spacer if needed.

Newbe here, learning as I go.

PS
I am fixing up this older Yamaha 50hp 2 stroke and was trying to get info from ............. Yamaha site and was shocked how rude and un helpful the people were on that site.
I think we are very blessed with the quality of this Club and the great people here.
Thankyou all very much. :)

thanks guys, if i could use my existing cables that would be great. theyre in good shape.....the main thing is a well built shifter, im kind of rough on things.
