nose cone/low water pick up

For small light weight boats or boats that have a huge power to weight ratio, a nose cone/LWP allows you to run the propshaft even or above the water surface for best top speed with surfacing props. For boats that require positive trim to hold the bow up, a nose cone will slow your top speed because a nose coned lower unit isn't as efficient with the prop shaft 2"-4" under the water as a stock gear case is...............

HEY MONTI, DUE TO THE WIDTH OF THE GEARCASE AND HYDRODYNAMICS, A NOSE CONE WILL ONLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE ABOVE 70-75MPH. THE NARROWER TORPEDO SHAPE OF THE CONE ALLOWS FOR LESS DRAG AND SPLITS THE WATER MORE EFFECTIVELY ALLOWING FOR MORE WATER TO REACH THE PROP. YOU MAY EVEN HAVE TO GO DOWN IN PITCH TO MAINTAIN THE SAME RPM.

I believe ? that's why Merc has the Tourque and Fleetmaster lower units. i think I saw that either, and or, the Optis or the Merc Racing offer a choice of the two on there big outboards???? I guess it depends on what type of boat, and top speed, you run??

When my tri-mate has completed the overhaul I will be dialing in the boat. I am going to fist set the boat up and run it with the factory lower unit. Once that is done I am going to install a nose cone/low water pick up and see what the gains are. I am going to do it in stages
1, stock lower unit
2, plug the top 2 holes of the water pick up.
3, Install a bob'e cone/low water pick up
Should be interesting to see if there are gains to had.
