nose cone

Hey members,
I have read all the info I can on a big foot nose cone with low water pick up. I hear there is no real advantage to the low water pick up, but how about the nose cone?
The "big foot" nose cone unit came on the boat when i bought it, is it slowing me down? Is there a advantage for steering or otherwise even if I cant hit 80mph?
Im not sure what brand it it, if that matters, doesnt look like a bobs....

I have another lower unit with just a cone, no low water should i use it for more speed?

Outboards: General knowledge is a nose cone will slow you down if you're boat isn't capable of 80+ mph speeds. On the other hand, LWP is always preferable, because it allows you to raise your motor as high as your prop bite allows,

LWP = Good

Nose cone = bad (unless you got the stuff to run over 80)

For I/O's, I don't know know for sure. LWP is probably not worth the modification, because you can't raise the outdrive vertically. Nose cone on an I/O is probably the same as outboard.

X2!

ok thanks, I have a outboard and a jack plate....how much would you estimate a cone will slow me down since i will not reach 80 with this motor

wait,....I should have a special prop with my set up...10" set back jack plate, LWP, 200 hp merc on a 21 1981 enchanter?

The nose cones only slow you down because they will lower the prop slip. If you don't have the power to still turn the prop with less slip, then you will see slower speeds.

I had a bobs w/LWP on my 150 XR2. It was mounted on my 13' playmate. There was little prop slip and I ran a 26p turbo 3 blade. I have no ideal how the nose cone changed the performance because it was on the motor when I got it. Also I did not want to push it any faster than 67gps. Just faster than I felt comfortable at in a 300# boat!

The add on nose cones like the Bob's increase the length of the gear case creating more drag. On most boats, it takes 75mph+ to start to overcome this. A coned gear case will also alter lift characteristics of boat/motor. I added a Bob's to a 225/2000br that ran 76gps stock and 75 with the cone.
