Powertrain questions about my Senator

OK. I saw the surface you were talking about. I cleaned it up best I could and couldnt see any numbers or letters. Is it possible the block has been cleaned up at a machine shop or something and the numbers got shaved off? Any other way to tell? heres some pics of where I was looking.

I was thinking about it last night and it dawned on me that when I registered the boat the motor serial # was on the title. Not sure if its for the motor I have in it but I guess its worth a shot. The # is B960849. Not sure how accurate this is because I know a few different motors have been in this boat.

That sucks if the nachines off the block numbers....makes it alot harder to ID it. I'll see if I can get anything from the last number for ya.... What year is the boat/ motor supposed to be?

The boat is an 87 Checkmate Senator. A few owners ago had dropped a BBC in it and ran it for a few years. Then pulled his motor out and put this one in it when he sold it. Thats about what I know about it.

Why do you even need the numbers anyway :sssh:

I was told the motor was a 350. I was just wondering what year motor it was for when I go to get parts or whatever. I also noticed the corvette emblem in the valve cover and it really started making me curious. I know someone could have just thrown those covers and or heads on it but still just wondering what I have. And when fbpd227 said its possible for it to be a rare chevy 302 thats when the search for the #'s really started!

Im going out on a limb here, But I really dout thats a rare 302 block, the guy probally had a nice BB in their and wanted to keep it, so he threw that small block in their. Vette valve covers are everywhere and thats probally the nicest thing the guy had laying around so he threw them on their. The chances of you having a 302 is slim to none. Put it this way if you do have a 302 block I will pay you 100 bucks just by proving it to me buy pics.

Every single part on the outside of that engine will swap out with any basic small block 302,305,327,350, etc. etc. If you need something just buy it for a 350. Just buy the parts for a 350 the year the boat is, if you have a problem with a part just post a pic and we will direct you to what year part you need to buy. 85 percent of V8 boats that are atleast 10 years old do not have the same engine in them, they came with.

Went back and looked at your valve covers, they look like the old cal-custom valve covers with a sticker smacked on it. Could be wrong just my thought

X-2 with BigRed. The chance that someone would have stucka multi thousand $ rare engine into an old Checkmate is going to be .0001% ( if they did- THEY didn't know what it was! lol ) ... You can obviously see it does not have the center bolt valve covers- so you know its from late 80's and older, and the dipstick is on the port side- late 80's to me....
X-2 again with BigRed- just order for the year of the boat. IF you ever do pull the heads off- (Let's hope they have at least put a "marine'ized" engine in it - right cam, head gaskets, dizzy, etc. although it does pretty much look like a stok marine engine from the pix.).check your bore size and stroke if you can- that will at least tell you if you have a 350.... Wish I could ID the block better for ya- but without the engine ID and suffix code- it's all just shooting blind.

I hear ya. Thanks again guys for all the help and info. If I do end up pulling it apart ill get the numbers off the heads. When you say a "marinized" engine. What's are the differences between that and a 350 out of a car/truck? I have heard that before but never asked why and what the differences were.

i have a 454 with a alpha, always take it easy on the holeshot, once your going it will take all of the hp. i put a drive shower on it and always run high performance mercury drive oil.
