I have done quite a bit of prop experimentation with the same boat/motor combination as you have. Thanks to a great Merc dealer in the Twin Cities (Supreme Marine) & friends who are into high performance boating I have been able to try Trophys, Tempests, Laser IIs, a High 5, Spinelli 3 & 4 blade, Mach 3 blades, Choppers & a DAH modified OMC SRX. I also tried a couple more Merc props but I do not remember their names. My favorite through hub prop is the Mach. They used to come standard from Checkmate but they are not available anymore. The Tempest might be a tic faster than the Laser II but hole shot is worse. 25" pitch is your best bet although for water skiing or operation with a boat full of people a 23" works better. I like Chopper style props for boating with a light load. Hole shot isn't terrible & they will give at least a couple of extra mph up top. You will need a 26" pitch with a chopper. DAH in Wisconsin reworks OMC SRX chopper style props for Merc applications. This is a custom, balanced, blueprinted, & polished prop for a reasonable price for what you get. They work great. I have done enough tinkering with my boat to be able to run a 27" DAH but 26" would be better for a stock set-up. If you have to live with just one prop, I would go with the 25" Laser II or Tempest depending on how you feel about hole shot. However, it's always a good idea to have a spare prop around "just in case" & if you do a lot of boating with a light load, a chopper is a real kick due to lots of bow lift. By the way, Supreme always seems to have quite a few used stainless props laying around. Might be worth it to give them a call.

heavy duty, When you say chop-prop do you mean a "Cleaver", and do you have any idea what rpm range and inch prop my 225 with a 6" hydr. plate can turn. Also i have a stepped hual. I know it's a lot of trail & error, but this is the first I heard about using a chop prop on a O/B. I had a cleaver on my old Enchanter, 260 I/O, and I loved it.

heavy duty, I did a Google search and found what I needed. I'm going to look into a chopper, and I sent Boger, a prop blueprinting specilists, a e-mail to ask him what proping he can do for my set-up. It may be worth it if I can get another 2 mph out of it.

A Merc chopper is a round ear design with no hub so the exhaust gasses pass over the blades. A cleaver has a straight trailing edge. Choppers provide lots of bow lift which is what the Pulsare and Starflite need to really fly. A cleaver generally is better for stern drive boats that need stern lift because of all the weight back there. Really light & fast outboards (Allisons, etc.)sometimes work well with cleavers also since they do not need bow lift. Merc has adapters so you can run their Chopper on any motor. However, Omc has an excellent Chopper style prop called the SRX. I'm not that familiar with the 88 225 Johnson. The right pitch will depend on horsepower, engine speed operating range, gear ratio and rigging. Your rigging sounds good. If your engine horsepower is rated at the prop then a good starting point for pitch would be to multiply 26" by the difference in your lower unit gear ratio and my 1.75/1 gear ratio. For instance, if you have a 2/1 gear ratio a good pitch might be about 2/1.75 X 26 or 30" If your engine power is rated at the powerhead I would use about 2" less pitch than the above calculation. Also, all of the above assumes your engine likes to operate in the 5500-6000 rpm range. If it is lower than that you will need more pitch. The best pitch will give you max recommended rpm with a light load. Its complicated enough that you should always insist on a try before buy policy. Many of the dealers in my area are ok with this. Good Luck

HEAVY DUTY, THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO. I HAVE A FRIEND DOWN HERE RUNNING A 26P TEMPEST THAT I'M GOING TO TRY. WHAT KIND OF SPEEDS ARE YOU RUNNING WITH YOUR SETUP?

Posted elsewhere, but its a long answer. Stock with a 25" Laser II I was running 78 speedometer, 72 gps. With some factory bolt on powerhead help & the 27" DAH I have now accomplished my goal of pegging the speedo back around to the 20 mph reading. This is a real gps speed of 76-78 mph.

heavy duty, It's rated at the prop, I've been told it's a strong 225. I' thinking of going with a Boger labed chopper. Maybe a 25 or 26". I e-mailed him my info.. I here he's one of the best when it comes to blueprinting the prop to the boat.
Thanks,

91 GTX, TIM, JUST RECEIVED YOUR PROP TUESDAY. COOL OLD PROP!! I AM GOING TO HAVE IT REWORKED BEFORE I TRY IT. E-MAIL ME THE COST OF SHIPPING AT USEDCARDEPO@AOL.COM AND I WILL SEND YOU A CHECK TO REIMBURSE THE COST. AGAIN, THANKS ALOT!!

JUPITER, DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE SHIPPING IT'S ON ME. HOPE THE PROP WORKS FOR YA. THE SPLINES IN THE HUP ARE GONE SO IT HAS TO BE REDONE. THAT PROP RAN THE BEST ON MY 81 ENCHANTER. LET ME KNOW HOW IT WORKS WHEN YOU GET IT BACK!

HEY TIM,BASED ON THE SERIAL # ON THE PROP STARTING WITH THE NUMBER 48, IT SEEMS THAT THIS PROP STARTED AS A MERCURY PRODUCT THAT WAS MACHINED ON BY DAH. IF THE PROP IS STILL A 26, IT COULD WORK REALLY WELL ON MY PULSARE. I CAN TELL YOU ONE THING FOR SURE, IT IS ALOT LIGHTER THAN A TEMPEST. IT SHOULD SPOOL UP PRETTY QUICKLY!!!

AGAIN THANKS AND I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED ON SPEED NUMBERS.

I just don't think chopper props are the best for a Pulsare. I've tried several and none of them work as well for me as my 28 4-blade trophy. My trophy has better hole shot, mid-range and top end than any chopper I've tried. Last year I had a 29 tempest that ran better top end, but had no hole shot. Only ran about 5800 rpms, so I sold it. It was worked for top end, so I assume it was closer to a 30p.

I'd like to try some others like maybe a stock 29 tempest, a Mach, Hyrdomotive or Spineli, or even maybe have my 28 trophy worked and labbed, but so far my 28 trophy has been the best.

I checked with Merc and BogerProps. They both said that a chopper will not be the best for a Starflite. Merc said use a Tempest and Boger said a cut four blade Trophy can work well. He also said the Tempest works well.

THE SERIAL # ON THE PROP THAT 91 GTX SENT ME INDICATES THAT THE PROP IS AN OLDER MERC CHOPPER THAT WAS WORKED BY DAH. IT'S NOW AT PROP TECH IN JUPITER GETTING A NEW HUB AND SHARPENED UP. I'LL BE ABLE TO TRY IT ON MY PULSARE NEXT WEEK!!!!!!!!

HEY TIM (91GTX), RAN THE DAH CHOPPER YESTERDAY. WOW!! GREAT PROP. GOOD OUT OF THE HOLE, STRONG MIDRANGE, AND HIT 71.2MPH ON GPS WITH MYSELF AND HALF A TANK OF GAS. I ONLY REGRET NOT WATCHING MY TACH TO SEE WHAT RPM I WAS AT. I WAS TOO BUSY TRYING TO HANG ON TO THE HAND HELD GPS AND STEERING WHEEL AT THE SAME TIME, WHILE MAKING ADUSTMENTS TO JACK PLATE AND TRIM WITH THE OTHER HAND, FOOT THROTTLING, AND ATTEMPTING TO CONQUER THE CHINE WALK!!!!!! WHAT A BLAST. IT'S ONE THING TO HAVE A FAST BOAT THAT IS BORING TO DRIVE VERSUS HAVING A FAST BOAT THAT IS A REAL CHALLANGE TO DRIVE AND KEEPS YOU GRINNING!!! AGAIN, THANKS FOR THE PROP. IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

HEY TIM, ONE OTHER THING ABOUT THE CHOPPER. IT IS WAY COOLER SOUNDING WITH THE OVER THE HUB EXHAUST VERSUS THROUGH HUB EXHAUST. SOUNDS LIKE A RACE BOAT WHEN GOING ROUND CORNERS!!

THOSE CHOPPERS DO SOUND COOL.. I HAD ONE FOR MY PREDICTOR WITH THE 140 TOWER OF POWER
.
THEY REALY GIVE A LOT OF LIFT.. MAKES THE BOAT FEEL REAL LOOSE..
