Prop Horn Small and Blowout Rings

Hi All,

I have a 2006 Checkmate Pulsare 2000 CD with a Tempest Plus 25 pitch prop (3 blade). I talked to Randy (fastest 21 ft Checkmate guy) down in Florida and sent him pictures and based on my setup, he recommended I buy a 26 Trophy Plus prop (4 blade). So to the internet I went and searched for a lightly used decently priced prop. Found one that was used twice for $300 and bought it. When I put it on, I noticed the horn of the prop was slightly smaller in diameter than my previous prop. So there's a gap about 1/8" around the prop to the lower unit housing. Will this give me problems?

I read that on lighter boats it should be ok, but heavy ones it might cavitate. If it will give me problems, am I better off selling it and looking for a larger one or would a ring around the prop help? Thanks in advance.
 
I would dump it and find one with the correct barrel. I'd also take a look the Bravo 1 props by Mercury. I think they're better than the Trophy+ props by a fair margin. Not cheap though.

FYI About Merc Trophy and Trophy plus props, The plus props have the small barrel, while the non plus are the large barrel.

With Trophy plus props, my boat does not like much or any ventilation holes open. At most I run two plugs with a small 1/4" or 3/8" hole and the other two plugs closed. If I go to a taller pitch 27-29, then I might need some ventilation.

I did not have any luck trying to run the spacer ring on the barrel of the smaller hub "plus" props.

Thanks for your input. Not looking to drop a bunch of money on another prop. Given my numbers and Randy's expertise, I would think that he knows what he's talking about because he rigs them for a living. He said he had my exact boat except was an open bow with same setup using a trophy plus 26 and did 76 mph. Not that you are wrong. Every boat is slightly different. I'll have to get it in the water this weekend and see what happens. I just was unfamiliar with different size barrels/horns.
 
Try it. I ran a small hub trophy on my last boat and it worked great. I think the pitch reccommmended should be good. One thing I always say is never pass up the chance to try a prop. Every driver and boat are different.

Update:

I tried the 26 trophy plus today. I noticed it as a plug in only one hole that has a 1/4" opening. The other 3 holes don't have anything. It slips a little getting on plane but once on plane goes like a bat out of hell. If I add 3 plugs with 1/4" opening will that get rid of the slip out of the hole? Thanks for any input!
