Ram 2500 6.4L Hemi?

Anyone here own one of the 2014 Ram 2500's with the 6.4L Hemi? Thinking about trading the diesel on one and curious on daily MPG.

With the price of diesel over $1 more per gallon than gasoline and diesel maintenance costs, a gasser is getting tempting.

I am a Dodge man, but I have watched a couple of road test video's on youtube where the 6.4 was tested along with Ford and Chevy, I was not impressed!

Mileage wasn't great and 0-60 was slower than Ford and Chevy. Don't see it being worth the extra $$$ over a 5.7 to just burn more gas. I would be way more interested in the new 1500 oil burner!

the 5.7 hemi is a great motor. 0-60 time is a useless stat in my opinion for truck as they are not a sports car. how offend due you put it to the floor on your truck. I really never do as it just sucks the gas. and I don't do it when towing a trailer.

lets us know how it performs. I think I would still prefer a diesel even with the gas price difference.

Well, I've been driving it since last night and have to say that I'm kinda impressed with this gasser. I've done a mix of city/highway and the evic is showing 13.5. The ride is nice with the new suspension (coils all 4 corners) for a HD. Great power (still not diesel power) and pickup. The ride height is also quite a bit higher than the dually.

Still not positive wether I want it or not..

Pros/cons to both.

Apples to oranges, since I'm a Chevy guy; but I've been parking my diesel since fuel is so high compared to gas. I have a 6 liter gasser lot truck that I've been using, I pull a small enclosed trailer(18ft) loaded down with my work gear and materials every day. Maybe 5-6 k, the gasser just doesn't pull as nice, plenty of power but its not as smooth as the diesel and I miss the tranny brake. Gas mileage is worse but I haven't been keeping track. I see 14 towing with the diesel around the city, you just wouldn't even know the trailer is back there. I'm not sure how heavy your rig is but I would consider dragging it around before you buy the truck just a thought.

That's a good looking truck, hope you end up with it!! It's no secret around here that i am 100% Mopar or No Car, only Dodge (and Plymouth) in my garage! With that said, i've been wondering how the new 6.4L HD trucks run/drive. Been reading alot of good things! I think it's great they are putting the 392 Hemi in the trucks, only i still haven't figured out why they down graded the HP to 420, unlike the 6.4 392's in the SRT Challenger/Charger that are 475hp. Still they are torque monster engines (in gasser terms), that's always been a staple of the Hemi. I have a 2011 Hemi Ram Express 1500 regular cab short box (my second Hemi Ram) i love the truck! The 5.7 tows the boat or a car on a steel trailer with no problem at all and the ride quality is excellent. I choose the Ram Express becuase i wanted the stripped down "muscle car" truck, which was the point of the Express. Anyway, good luck on making a deal, i don't think you could go wrong with a new 392 6.4L Ram!

0 to 60 is a great stat! Why shop for a vehichle with more hp and torque if you are not going to use it. In my opinion, if it can't get it's own weight moving, it's probably not going to get an extra 8000lbs moving very well. Good 0-60 times also let you know what kind of passing ability the truck will have. As for putting it to the floor, dang straight it's been there. If it's not built strong enough to take it, I don't want it! All of these torque and hp numbers that we compare when shopping for a new truck are rated at W.O.T. If I am towing a car up a hill and I want to run the speed limit, some times W.O.T. is what it takes to get what you paid for. So far, I have not been disappointed in the 5.7 Hemi. On a 50+ mile trip today going up and down hills on a winding road, my average 1 way was 26mpg and average for round trip was 22. And that included a couple of smacks to the floor. So back to my original statement, I can't see the small difference in torque numbers and 25 more hp being worth the extra cost of the 6.4 and the extra gas it will burn. Could be wrong, but I will have to see it.

each to their own. I pay attention to torque and horsepower. I also test drive them to see if I like them. we all agree that diesels are the best for towing but what is their 0-60 time like compared to the gas versions?

on subject that is a great looking truck!!

Thanks for all of the input. The one thing I like in the 6.4 over the 5.7, is the MDS. It's not offered on the 5.7 in a 3/4, but is on the 6.4. Some like it, some don't, but it does help in the MPG department. My main load is a 7200lb gooseneck horse trailer. Fully loaded I'm right around 11-12,000lbs. I would have loved to hook up to it wih this truck and try it, but the truck doesn't have the gooseneck in it yet. I did hook up to the neighbors bumper pull equipment trailer with a 500 gallon water tank on it. Filled the tank with water (combined weight around 7500lbs) and pulled it around. I was quite surprised with the way the truck handled. Take offs were good in town and never felt like it was lacking power on the highway. It didn't feel like it was hunting gears or anything.

After haggling all day on the phone and walking out of the dealership several times, we finally came to a deal and the truck is now in my driveway for Good. Got them to throw in the gooseneck, brake controller, and a set of airbags for the rear with an on-board compressor... I may miss the power of the diesel once in a while, but I won't miss the price of fill-ups, oil changes, or buying 6 tires at a time.

After putting about 70 miles on it, it's averaging around 13.5 mpg. I reset the evic on the way to the dealership. It 17 miles away on a 2 lane highway and pretty flat. It averages 14.7 on the evic. Best I ever got with the dually was 13.5 and this truck only had about 90 miles on it so hoping it will improve a little more with some miles and summer blend gas.

As I said, thanks for all of the input.

Congrat's dude! With a goose neck, you needed the 3/4 ton truck. Did not know that the mds was not available on the 3/4 so mpg's probably not much different than the 5.7 without it. 0-60 on the new 1500 diesel are reported at 7.7 seconds in a 4 door truck with a 9600lb tow rating. That's not much slower than an equally equipped 5.7!

By the way, we need PICTURES! Never mind, the idiot found them. Great color choice!
