replace transom from outside?

Give this a try on the gel coat, the bassers swear by it on the BBC(bass boat central). The guy that owns the place is very helpful. Here's the link:http://protecproducts.com/

Rob thanks I will give that a try. I just need something to get me by for this year. I tried all kinds of waxes and once a drop of water hits the boat the red turns to white.

This sounds like it will do the trick: http://protecproducts.com/index.php/pro-tec-products/nu-paint-moisturizer.html
For old or heavily oxidized boats cars or RV's. Not a wax or compound but an actual oxidation remover that matches color. Rubbing compounds contain harsh abrasives that scratch and even remove the surface fiberglass and gel-coat. The moisturizer contains only MICRO - FINE abrasives that will not harm the surface. After NU-PAINT MOISTURIZER is used, wash and dry, then apply our Pro Tec Sealant Polish to your boat, car or RV for great protection and shine. 16 FL OZ (472 ML)

Pro-Tec Sealant Polish Easy To apply Leaves a High-gloss shine Removes and prevents fading and oxidation Actually Seals the Surface to protect it from pollutants, harsh weather, sun glare and saltwater. Washing will 'Not' remove Product from surface. 16 FL OZ (472 ML)

hey demag...

have you tried compounding the surface with a light to medium compound with a wool pad? 3M finesse-it works pretty good as a final stage...ive taken some pretty heavy oxidation out with 3M products and a wool pad with some fantastic results. if the surface if porous it will require rigorous buffing to remove the imperfections followed by a good wax to seal and finish it up. waxing it repeatedly will hide the imperfections temporarily but as you have seen...they will simply come back.

I think that compounding is gonna be the best permanent fix. ive brought some vehicles back to life that others have said were un savable with this stuff....

good luck!!

Hmm....might have to try some of this stuff. I got some Performance Boat Candy stuff I am going to try first this spring. We will see how that goes.

X2!! I was given him the quick fix, but I do agree with you on the 3M products.

The boat isn't in gel coat anymore. I sprayed it in interlux perfection a couple of years ago. I have tried buffing with a couple of different compounds. also tried 3m's 3 pc set of compound. I think it is a combination of oxidation and dry pigment. after I buffed it the boat looked great. an hour later it got water on it and it instantly turned to white where the water touched it. the quick fix is the only way, even if I have to do it a couple of times over the summer.

Sorry to hear the bad news, Bruce. As far as the paint goes, a coat of good clear might solve your problem. If it looks good wet it should look good cleared.
The transom sounds like the big problem though. Years ago some friends of mine were discussing fixing an outboard transom using a sheet if 1 1/2 inch to 2 inch clear plexiglass lag bolted to the outside of the transom, and cut to the same dimensions as the transom. We never did it . The guy sold the boat. It would be a temporary fix. Wonder if it would work. What do you guys think? Just a thought to get you on the water.

Good luck!

hmmm

im clueless man...never seen paint do that....let us know your results.....curious to see how it turns out. ive used some interlux products....the VC epoxy for bottoms is awesome. don't know about the Perfection....or what he proper way to bring it back to life would be.

Bob I'm not sure if that would work. I would clear it but I won't have enough time to get it done. Plus I am going to paint it a different color. I have stuff ordered but need everything to come in the mail for the transome. Max after this started happening I had talked to interlux at the Atlantic city boat show. They asked me if I had buffed the boat and I said yes about two weeks after I used a heavy compound to cut it down and I had to wet sand a couple of little spots. They told I should not have wet sanded or buffed it. Only plain wax. Told me there is nothing I can do with it. Will never use their paint again.

rob, I have looked around and think I might go with a ppg base and duraflint 2 which is the old amerflint.
