That old omc drive does not have the hydrodynamics to gain much speed or the prop options to gain much speed. Im not a betting man but i would be willing to place some money on the table that if someone were to built 2 identical motors and put them in 2 identical boats and put your drive behind one and a stock alpha behind the other the alpha could be setup to run 5 plus mph faster easily..
As the only other owner of a Checkmate with an old OMC drive on this board, I resemble that remark, or rather my boat does.
Not sure about if the loss of speed is hydrodynamics, but I do know that there is not enough total trim range. You can shim the front of the motor 3/4-1" to get a better hole shot for pulling tubes and wakeboards and keep the bow down while doing it but loose 7-10mph or you can run it flat on the stringers and gain back about 7mph for a top speed around 62-3, or you can shim the back of the motor 3/4-1" and go almost as fast a Merc leg 65-66mph but even with full tirm in the bow will ride rather high pulling a tube or two. And 300hp is all it can take. If any of this was different I would have done it.
