Senator cabin remodel

I just bought a 1991 Senator. It's a great boat, but the one thing I don't like is the cabin. I have one boy with another on the way and my brother is about 7 months away from having 3 girls. I would like to have something more like the Convinsor cabin so the kids could play inside the cabin when we're putting along.

The floor of the boat is the same level throughout and doesn't leave much room in the cabin area. What I would like to do is lower the floor in the cabin area and put seats along each side. A sleeping area is not necessary for us so the area would be dedicated to seating and maybe a fridge.

Is this something that is feasable or do I just need to wait to get a bigger boat? Is there someone else who has done this? I do have some experience with fiberglassing cars and woodworking, so that part does not concern me.

Also, would adding a ventilation hatch cause structural integrity issues in the bow's top?

some things in my opinion are best left alone. buy the boat you want, as a previous owner of a senator I am sure someone would love to have your senator in proper form as much as you would like a convincer. The senators are getting harder to find.
 
Yeah, I was second guessing the idea today. I was envisioning cleaning it after a weekend out with the kids. Unless I start to have problems with the floor, I don't think I'll change it. I should have known better about 1 AM ideas. ;)

Were the Senators not very popular? When I was looking at buying the boat, it was very hard to find pictures of a Senator.
 
I would leave it alone and buy a Convincor you will never have the room you wan't. The more I read your post the more I think and what you need is a pontoon. You say you have a son and one on the way, your brother's 3 and I assume you both have a wife. Dude thats 9 people. If a pontoon is not you tell your brother to buy his own boat.

LOL, I took my brother out today and he refused to drive because he was afraid he was going to buy one.

Yeah, the wife wanted a pontoon to begin with. I may just have to give in. A pontoon boat would be easier to clean too. Thanks for the input.

You can have 6 adults in a Convincor with no problem. 2 in the front and 4 on the back bench. But I don't like no more than 4 in my boat at once. I stop at a lot of bars on the lake and backing in a slip sucks with 6 in the boat, somebody is always in the way and I am anal about my boat touching the dock.

Maybe you can keep your Checkmate and get your brother to buy the pontoon or you both go in halfs.
 
The pontoon boat would be an addition, not a replacement. The only boat that will replace this mate is another one. I'd probably pick up a project pontoon and create the layout I wanted.

Thanks for the posting the pics! That Senator would definitely stand out from across the river.
