Starting with a plugged up carb......bad idea???

Just kind of asking a general question as i had some boat probs last saturday. The carb for the bottom two cylinders was plugged up i guess from some old gas and i repeatedly tried to start it to see if it would clear itself out. Well it didnt and i ended up pulling the carb in the parking lot and giving it a good cleaning. After that it ran ok.

My question is ...could i have hurt something if the bottom two cylinders werent actually getting any fuel??? Would it actually have to run for some time to hurt anything? How would i know? It actually ran pretty good on Sunday ...i managed 66gps while i was running all the gas out. Just curious i guess...i was surfing through some threads and saw stories of guys scoring the cylinders and such..because carbs got plugged up. Just worries me a little now...

I would guess that there is a chance of scoring the pistons and cylinder walls due to oil starvation. If the cylinder is not getting any fuel then it isn't getting any oil either.

Thats kind of what i was reading. How would i know if i did score a cylinder? im guessing it would run right then. This is just something at the time that never crossed my mind. :brickwall:

Do a compression test would be the easiest unless you know someone with a borescope so you could through the sparkplug holes.

If its running good you should be alright, dont think I would worry too much about it. You could do a compression check or have someone scope the cylinders to see if there is any scoring.

I've been wanting to do a compression test since i bought the boat...just to see. I need to just buy the gauge and do it already.

I def dont think its hurt though. I just really need to keep up on my maintenance from now on and dont let it sit for so long. Thanks guys.
