Steering cable change?

New member
Hey,

I just bought a 1987 sportsfire with a 135 Mercury. The steering cable is extremely tight. I have the replacement cable and am looking for any advice with the installation. The previous owner told me that the sterring wheel works from the 'old' rack system rather than the geared steering. I appreciae any tricks or things to be careful of.

All Check's come with the Mercury Ride-Guide rack steering system, and are upgradeable to dual cable steering for much more control and stability
steering head is already dual cable ready, just install 2 new cables, and pick up a dual cable install kit from merc. you will be much happier with the steering.

I'm pretty sure all you have to do is unbolt the end of the cable from the rack under the dash. there should be two small nuts locked together on the left side. there may also be a nut on the right. after these are out you can unbolt the wheel and remove it. then slide the cable out of the rack. next, loosten the cable at the engine bracket. you should now be able to slide the whole thing into the boat.

its been a while since i have been into one but its not too hard.

Hey ilmattic when did you move from Michigan to Ohio?
This is way off topic but............... Ive been out of touch for a while.

Wow a year, I have popped in and out, not really following anything. Gas prices changed my families normal summer. Went to the lake but not as often and didnt use the boat. Hopefully the prices will stay where they are now.

Thanks Guys!

While it'll be spring here in Chi-town before I try installing the steering cable, I appreciate the advice! If anyone has a/the 'Way-to-do-it' - send me some love ! Thanks.
