Steering cable TOO long!

Vandalizer

Well-known member
I have an '81 Enticer, and the steering cable is long enough that it is contorted in the cockpit, and I cannot train it with the other wires heading back to the engine. Should I shorten this, and how?

Easier to do at the steering wheel, or at the connection to the L/U? Looks like I'd have to crimp on a new connector?

After thinking about it more, I've settled with NOT touching the motor end.
Is there anything special about the cable that won't allow me to cut it to length at the steering wheel?

you don't want that cable to come loose or apart and throwing the boat and its occupants into violent turn and possibly being thrown overboard.Believe me its no fun being ejected due to a steering failure of anykind. Mechanical or Mental.

Now that makes sense. I thought you were talking about the installation being dangerous. I've only looked at one place (Overtons) so far, but the cable is $30. Trying to use my hands to fix as much as possible. I suppose I could always just disconnect the cable and hide the extra under the dash...

Anyone know how the steering wheel actually connects to the steering cable?

you would be further ahead to buy a new one. you will not be able to coil it up anywhere in the boat.
