Stereo Question...I'm not a stereo guy.

Sam I am

Well-known member
Looking to go with Alpine Marine Stereo in the Starliner. I was hope to have all matching Alpine speakers, but they don't make Marine 6X9..so I'll have to mix and match. Here are some questions:

What do I need in an amp to run 2 coaxials forward, 2 coaxials rear, 2 6x9's and 10" Sub? I was looking at the PDX-5M:

http://alpine-usa.com/product/view/pdx-5m/

The Sub was mounted all the way forward in the bow area in the wall that sealed off the nose.

Any with a 2400 and the cup holder speaker pods know what size speaker they can fit in there? 6.5" or 7"?

I'm going with the two battery set up...so I should have enough power.

Anyone else with an opinion on sound systems let me know what you're thinking.

Sam

That amp will work. You will need to wire the 2 sets with the highest power rateing together and run them off one of the amps channels. ex. 6x9 wired to rear and then to amp.

I've always felt alpine was a great brand back in the day when I was in to car audio systems. Another great brand is kenwood if you're looking for 6x9's. I've never done much with multi channel amps, i always did dedicated amps for Components and subwoofers. My assumption would have been to combine 2 left coaxial speakers into one channel, right 2 into a channel, one channel for each 6x9 and then your mono sub channel. But I've not done one quite like this. Either way, sounds like it's going to rock! Good luck.

Wiring in parrell or series will also decide which ones you wire together. My ex. was what I would probaly do if wired parrel dropping it to 2 ohms and boosting power.

I can hear you now saying wtf to your self.lol

JL marine speakers are outstanding and very expensive, if $$$$$$ is no object, they are really hard to beat. But in two different 2100 br's we had MB Quartz marine speakers, and the Polk DB series speakers which are rated for marine use. Both sounded really good 6-1/2 upfront and 6x9 under the back seat. We did not have a sub in either boat, but playing at a reasonable level, everyone thought I had a small sub in both boats, in fact they hit hard enough, I choose not to add a sub. But when I owned a Hydrostream Voyager, I did add a 6 inch Bazooka tube, which was outstanding, again if you were not trying to play at concert levels. Of course we had Alpine head units with bluetooth (and just used there standard car units, I think a CDE133BT for model number), as for amps a variety, kicker, kenwood, and a very small class "D" can't remember the brand, I think "Shark", anyway speakers and amps off of Ebay, headunits from Crutchfield.

Not WTF...just pause for concern.

I'm with you in theory...just never done it and I want a really nice clean install. But I generally stay away from electricity...flows like water, but not really, is invisible and can kill you, can start fires and melt stuff if not executed properly, is invisible and can kill you....hmmm...I'll go with expert install please!

Instead of putting one speaker in the middle of the now wall why not put two and a hatch in the middle. Having access to that area is very handy even if you don't plan on storing anything up there.

John

Good point!

I was going to center the sub, there, but...I supposed I could do two small subs and put the hatch in...hmmmmmm.

I'd do the hatch. If you want the info from. Mine I can dig up the receipt for you. If you ever need to mess with the front part of the now rails, the front cleat, or the bow light wiring you'll be wishing you had a hatch. I store the kids' swim noodles and the tiny life jackets we rarely use up there.

Thanks, John, that would be great. If you have it handy, please send my way.

Checkmate forums: great community due to great people.

I'll try to remember to get it when I get home tonight. I ordered a black hatch to match my black carpet. They're available in white too.

The amp you have referenced puts out 4 X 75 watts at 4 or 2 ohms. Alpine states there is no power increase for dropping to two ohms with this amp. This means the 6.5 in the rear will rob power from the 6x9.

I would only run 1 speaker on each of the 4 channels. (with this amp)

The sub output is rated for 1 X 300 watts at 2 ohms. This means you can either a 2 ohm sub or a dual 4 ohm voice coil sub. (I would run the DVC)

For what it's worth, I run an older Kicker ZX700.5 amp (similar power) with Polk DB series speakers and 10" DVC sub. I have used Polk for years and will continue to until I can't hear any longer. :bigthumb:

Tip.... Build an actual enclosure for the sub for best sound. Mine looks like its just in the seat base but is actually in a box under the seat.

I'll vouch for Polk dB's, I have a set in my Enchanter. I've always liked them and Infinity for my car and boat speakers.
