I have been looking for a 24 or 25 convincor for a while, I have ruled out an I/O and am now only considering outboards. Please contct me, I am very flexible, any time frame, any condition, with or without power. I would prefer a boat that was clean and done but a project will work as well. I have cash and am ready to go, please call Lou 516 315 7577

If I only had the money to afford twins that sonic would have been perfect....With gas @ $3.00 a gallon Im still looking for that 24 or 25 single outboard.

Gas prices on Long Island are the worst. Yesterday they were $2.85 for 93 octane. Trying to be patiant waiting for that outboard convincor.

These days it is a luxury to live on Long Island. EVERYTHING is expensive. Moved from Babylon, NY to Wilmington, NC a couple years back. Gas is always cheaper anywhere but LI.

Pulse 171... I saw your post but SCT beat me to it... Very nice Checkmate with twin 200's for $8500!!! Be sure to page down and SEE all the photos... And it's close to you... Seem's like a steal if the motors compression check OK...
Well worth the LOOK... Jim

looks like a nice boat, plan on looking into it, still has twins which kill on gas but worth looking at. I wonder how that boat sits in the water with all that weight so far back....

Pulse,

At $8500.00, you can't go wrong with this boat. You will still have alot of money left over for gas!!! And you can always get your money+ back out of it.
Plus, how many 25' boats that will run over 70+ can you buy for 8.5K??

Check it out,

SCT

Very interstd/excited/nervous about seeing this boat...If its as good as it seams its mine however its a very risky boat...Its almost 25 years old in salt water, could be rotted beyond belief and I probably wont be able to find out until its too late. The engines are rebuilt, yes but who knows who did it and what they used. The motors are over 20 years old and must be soft by now. Repowering the boat could be and easy 30k...I love the boat but am very nervous of buying a headache/project. Help. Any wodrs of wisdom.

I find it hard to believe that this is going to be rotted. He doesn't leave it in the water and trailers it. Yes, it's been in saltwater but other than the oxidation (it had new paint) isn't really an issue. Looks like the guy took really good care of it. If I had a truck that could tow it, I would come up and pick it up. Beat on the floor really good in the stern and stand on the lower units and watch the transom. Even if you had to redo the transom, it's still worth the money. You are not going to find a better boat for the price. If you are so worried about the age, buy a newer one and be in debt up to your eyeballs for the next ten years. Or buy this boat, run it all you want, and if you blow up the motors, rebuild them for 5-8 grand. In my eyes, this is a no brainer. Just remember what boat stands for Break Out Another Thousand. Welcome to boating

b o a t that just might be the best acronym ive ever heard. I hear everything your saying but who knows if you can evern rebuild the motors again, remember they are over twenty years old...Sometimes its not the motors its the tilt motors, starters, wiring harnesses, i JUST DONT WANT A NIGHTMARE...I want to use the boat not have it in and out of the shop. Long Island, were lucky if we get 10 good weekends, everyone of the counts, does it pay to do a survey? I plan on hanging on those engines myself and I will definetly do a compression test. Anyway of testing any softspots on the bottom of the hull?

I would say take your chances with this boat. I know that someone else is going to pick it up and get some good use out of it. As far as soft spots on the bottom of the hull, the nice thing about the boat is the bottom was never painted. You know that a lot of boats are left in and the bottom is painted. This can hide all the shit spots. This boat is bare and you are going to be able to see it. I would think the hull would never be soft, but the floor and stringers might be a different story. Ask if its covered when not in use. Does he cover it with shrinkwrap in the winter. Etc. Hire someone who knows what they are doing and what to look for in the older boats if you are not sure what to check. I have a good friend who I grew up with who is a marine mechanic who lives one town from where the boat is (Islip). I can have you call him and he can check it out for you for a couple hundred. It would be money well spent. If you want his #, I can give it to you. It's up to you.

I looked at the boat today. The owner was very persistant in not letting me cut the shrink wrap off the boat to really see it. I asked if he would dump it into the water for me to test drive at final pick up and would not. We settled on letting me run the engines in his driveway before the deal would be finalized. I ran a compression test where most cylinders were 120 but some were 115 and one was 110. Hoping the boat runs well at the test. Keep you posted

Well it is shrink wrapped, that means he cares about the boat. It looks like he has taken care of it. The compression is a little low for 110 on the one cylinder. Supply the guy with one of those shrink wrap doors that you put on and cut open. Then you can zipper it up. How did the boat look as far as the hull and everything else? Did the engines look good? What about the trailer?

pulse171...
Given those compression numbers were dead COLD, your 110 may not be an issue. If you RUN them on a hose until warn, then do a compression test. Dry and warn 120-125 is ideal, 110-115 is still within the 10% range of acceptable. Shoot some light oil (fogging oil or WD-40 into the low hole) and recheck compression. If it comes up, it's probably rings may be stuck a bit from sitting or a touch of cylinder wall scuffing. Either way, the 110 COLD is still not bad and will probably run fime for a long time. For the money, that boat seems to be a great find... just don't tick off the seller with being too picky or you can loose the deal all together!
Good luck, Jim
