water pick-up

my 251 has a bronze thru hull water pick-up for the engine instead of thru the bravo drive, have the engine out now, see they have block off plate on the transom assy. to me the the fairly large scoop on the hull would slow the boat down a bit, just looking for input, as should not be a big deal to covert back with the engine out, any help would be app. Thanks Rob

I am willing to bet that the water passage through the gimbal is rotted out. Thats why an offshore style pick up was installed. First thing I would do, is remove the block off plate and inspect the gimbal. Then access whether it can be used or not. Providing that it is not too far gone, I have sucessfully repaired them before.

Is it on the bottom or the transom? I can tell you from first hand experience that a transom pick up that is not properly trimmed down, will scrub off a few MPH. When I installed a small pick up on my Convincor it hung down 1/4", after trimming it, I gained about 3 MPH. Free speed-:D
