Why does my merc only run good at idel or WOT.
Why does it suck the gas line empty when it's running?

I just installed new spark plugs, gas ball, and filter.
I know i have good gas. It feels like it cuts in and out a cyl or two.

Please help.

take the fuel line fitting out of the tank and lok inside the fitting from the threaded end there will be a screen

clean and reinstall with a small amout of number 2 prematex on the threads
not enough to get inside just to caot the treads

take the fitting off the top of he tank. use a screw the size of the opening in the top of the lil screen that is in there. thread it in by hand and pull it out. this screen is most likly plugged. it happened on mine and the nerds. i didnt replace mine since i have an inline filter outside of the tank.

this will fix the line being sucked dry. it may also be the cause of the poor midrange as well. :bigthumb:

I had a similar problem, it plagued me nearly all summer. I switched a few things and made a few adjustments, but nothing worked. I finally removed the little filter that is in the pickup tube inside the tank and it ran fine. I did put an inline filter in from NAPA. Kinda made me mad, should have checked that sooner.

AHHH, I seem to remember that discussion going a bit differently, I recall someone suggesting that I put it back in. But anyway, its fixed now.

The pick up screen in the tank was clean but I pulled it out anyway. Then I found that the female gas line connector to the engine was not air tight so I replaced it. I took the matr out and it ran a lil better and the line remained pressurized but the engine would still had crappy mid range. Yesterday I drained the bowls and some crud came out of one of the top carbs. I shot some carb cleaner up and rinsed it out with gas and I will try it out one day this week. Thanks for the help. I'll keep you posted.

thanks for the advice, I need to disassemble and clean the carbs. I drained the bowls and some crud came out of the top port side carb. I belive the is my problem. I cant wait to get it runnin good. I have been mixing it 40:1. is that a good ratio or should I go 32:1?

another wonder product for an engine is merc's engine tuner. spray into each throat and let it sit in the motor for a bit, then fire up and watch the crap come out the exhaust - it frees up all the carbon and junk that builds up over time.

mercury calls it power tune. it pulls carbon off of the pistons and such i do it before every tune up on carb. moters. mercury does not recomend it on the optimax because it can screw up injector seals and such. also they know tell you to try to make it so the primer ball arrow faces up it helps the primer ball hold prime because it set the check ball. some times i like to soke the carbs in costic soda for a little bit it cleans out all the passages

I'll let you guys know if the screen is plugged. Thanks

check screen and maybe the gas line is too small 1/4 in and it's sucking the ball flat, I have had that happen. I found with that happening to me I had to go to a bigger gas line 3/8 to get the right volume, could be the gas pump is it factory or after market??
